It's true, "The Unsustainable Lifestyle" is great, and best of all, it takes a few listens for its innumerable qualities to fully unfurl.
Superficially, it's an album of skewed, catchy, boy/girl guitar pop with great lyrics (that are just as great to warble along to as they are to sit down and consciously follow). Yes, it also fuses Beatles-y melodies and tricksily Costello-like structural twists with the confrontational, quasi-political dynamic of the Fugazi/D.C. cognoscenti. But more than this, it's also probably the finest album to have dared tackle the mixture of mundanity and terror that typifies contemporary life in the post 9/11 environment. It's also catchy as hell!
A bold statement? Witness "Such Large Portions!", in which the narrator deconstructs the act of petting an airport bomb-sniffing dog with such casual, effortless grace that it's as if all human life has been exposed and laid bare (cosmically pathetic coping mechanisms and all).
As for the qualms about this record being too cynical to really register, the final track "Terrible Things" concludes proceedings on an extraordinarily pro-active, reassuringly optimistic note: "Terrible things are going to happen", sings Chad Clark. "This record's over, so why not go outside and stop them?".
Musically, too, "The Unsustainable Lifestyle" is propelled by a wriggling, senseless innovation - flirting with everything from slanted punk ("The Mule On The Plane"), elegiac lounge-jazz ("Won't You Be Mine"), psychedelic balladry ("Nancy Medley..."), and acoustic song-smithery ("Prison Song"), all the while carving a battered, genre-hopping musical syntax that's entirely its own. There are also a dazzling array of headphones-appeasing sonic tricks which make this album a truly rewarding listening experience (that further reveals itself with every listen).
Listen to the hilarious, speaker-traversing bluebird noises on "Won't You Be Mine", the channel-wobbling tremolo that opens "Nancy Medley" or the hyper-percussive groove that drives "The Western Prayer". Truly, it's a hyper-stereo affair, best heard at as loud a volume as possible (or, even better, on headphones).
To those familiar with the band's previous (pretty damn special) material, "The Unsustainable Lifestyle" fleshes out those EPs' briefly conceptual retreats into a fully-realised, and expertly linear album. Lyrically and artistically, this album works not only as a brilliant, bent-out-of-shape pop album, but also as a collection of stories, moments, and fleeting thoughts that are lent extraordinary emotional depths.
"The Unsustainable Lifestyle", then - You can dance to it. It makes you think about things you wouldn't normally think about. It unravels and exposes modern life. It's catchy. It's innovative. It's dynamic. It's funny. It's a shot in the arm of the breathless indie-rock corpse. It gets better with every listen. It's a headphones album. It's a pop album. It's a complete, start-to-finish affair. What more could you ask of an album?
I've had this album blaring every day for the best part of a month. It hasn't aged a milisecond, and not one note has grown stale. My sensibilities tell me that this album will remain fresh and invigorating for a very, very long time to come.
