Its july 2002 and Puddu Varano a danish dance act featuring Lady Z on vocals have just rocked the electronica tent at Roskilde festival.The atmosphere onstage and from the 7000 strong crowd is electrifying, backstage, Morten Varano the bands producer programmer and label manager has a proposition for the singer-songwriter, to record and produce a song based electronica album.
In October 2002 Varano, nominated for a danish grammy award for the best dance album of the year (Puddu Varano/Time to Grow) signed Lady Z to his Independent label Murena Records and the jazz-electro act known as SLOW TRAIN shifted into second gear. Within six months from proposition to product, in between tours, club promotions, releases and other music activities the duo spent a total of three weeks at Varano’s studios in Copenhagen and London, writing, recording and mixing their 12 track debut album Illegal Cargo.
As a recording artist and dance music producer with 32 releases in three years Morten Varano’s ability to place magic on vinyl is incredible, his work with Puddu Varano and Los Chicharrons (Tummy Touch Records) has earned him respect from other dance music producers (Richard Dorfmeister, DJ Yosef, Roger Sanchez) and Puddu Varano’s 12inch release (Blue Sky White Sand...feat Lady Z) have hit the number one slot on the uk & dk radio one dj favourites list (Ben Watt). He signed and produced one of Brazils hot new vocalists, Carla Alexandar (Poesia) and has promoted two of Copenhagens most successful club nights “Voodoo Club” and “Lust” from 1998 -2002. Beside his busy recording schedule and running his three labels Murena records, Voodoo Recordings and DRAMA!king he is also running Copenhagen club Rust
Lady Z is the electronica alter ego of London based soul jazz singer-songwriter Z Star. The multi-talented vocalist & mc has written, recorded and performed* with artists such as Asian Dub Foundation*, Omar, Keziah Jones, Natacha Atlas (track featuring Sinnead O’Connor ) and soul jazz legend Terry Callier, who lovingly gave her the name Lady Z during a recording session at Incognito’s Blue studio. In May 2002 she was asked to write and perform the closing song for the Vagina Monologues Celebrity Galla (Royal Albert Hall) and later that year, classical violinist Nigel Kennedy invited her to join his jazz band on their UK/European tour (Feb/Mar 2003), Z* is the first jazz vocalist to perform with him live. She also promotes one of londons most popular New Talent events “Entry Level ” (Vibe Bar).
On the dance music scene, Lady Z has collaborated with, Los Chicharrons, Puddu Varano, Heal, Goudi, and Gerald Elms.(Defected) with current releases on Mr Bongo, Irma, Voodoo, Murena and Key Recordings.
The Slow Train audio adventure is classy, confident and uncompromising. One can hear the injection of Varano and Zs’ musical roots in the flavas used to create their new sound. Deep old skool funk n jazzy breaks with world music undertones create a very specialist backdrop but when infused with sharp songwriting skills, unforgettable vocal melodies and seamless production the album becomes a more accessible soundscape. Lady Z’s lyrical storylines takes the listner on a 24hr ride through nocturnal urban realities to escapist blue sky beaches where one can reflect and re-energise.
Her guitar and percussion licks combined with Varano’s classically trained keyboard skills and smooth programming techniques gives the music a dynamic sound.
The debut album “Illegal Cargo” has now been released worldwide on labels such as Tommy Boy (US); Playground, Scandinavia, Wagram (France & Benelux), Virgin/ EMI (Italy), Collision (Australia) & Content/EDEL (Germany, Spain, Portugal). Murena/ Kusod records (UK). In the US, Scandinavia (ex Denmark) & Germany the band will be known as Slow Train Soul.
