Fantastic record with so many discoveries (Fertile Ground!!!) and an eclectic selection of tracks. Garrantied to satisfy or your money back!!!
Jazz Bizniz 2' uncovers the obscure gems that inspired the nu-jazz generation. With tracks coming from each of the last four decades. It's a bit like a history lesson for jazz-breaks DJs. There's some wonderful deep jazz, excellent skewed-soul and irresistible Afro-boogie grooves. The lack of driftwood is particularly noticeable- each of the 14 tracks here is a bona fide classic.
A must-have set for fans of soulful spiritual jazz -- and a killer set all the way through! Russ Dewbury and Jake from Hot Biscuit put this one together, and it's a monster batch of obscure soul jazz tunes that totally blows away volume one of the series! The overall sound is very hard to describe -- but think of Strata East during its best years, the Detroit underground of Tribe records, the spiritual pan-continental sound of Oneness Of Juju, the sweet jazz vocals of Dee Dee Bridgewater -- and then imagine all those sounds coming from even more obscure artists working in a more obscure underground! The bulk of these tracks are from the 70s -- but there's a few more from recent days that fit the mood perfectly, like tracks by the Baltimore soul jazz outfit Fertile Ground, or the Japanese combo Jazztronik. Very unified overall -- and with a righteous sound that can't be beat!

This compilation demonstrate that both styles have energy in common: the energy of a deep funk groove and that of a strong guitar solo. Moreover, Pete Adarkwah and dj spinna's selection dives into the crates of both funk and rock and delivers a compilation that makes us discover many underrated gems. One single regret: they should have pay tribute to the utmost funk-rock band: Funkadelic.
Many of us may have some difficulty in making the link between funk and rock but thanks to BBEs Funk Rock ageing rockers such as Santana, Steve Miller and Brian Auger are now found along side better known acts in the BBE pantheon such as Sylvester and Headhunters. The connection is easily found in hip hop, funky guitars, drum breaks, whether in a James Brown, or a Chicago record. Many of the songs here have been sampled over and over again by some of the world’s greatest Hip Hop producers, no doubt some of the breakdowns will sound more than just a little familiar. Devadip more commonly known as Santana has already passed into music’s most hallowed hall of fame, collecting several grammy awards last year after more than thirty years in the business, Life is Just A Passing Parade, if only they made music like this still. Steve Winwoods R& B charged voice, often resembling that of Ray Charles, scored his first UK No 1 in 1965 with Keep On Running. Like Steve Miller, his sound was an eclectic mix, leaving the Funk Rockers coming back for more every time. Sly Stone, like George Clinton and Parliament is one of the best known black funk artists welding psychodelia and rock to create what can only be called Funk Rock. Trip to Your Heart comes from his first album on Epic and the intro of screaming guitars and drums is today no longer such a strange sound fusion. Throughout this compilation we have artists who do not rest easily into the categories often heaped on them. Their musical hearts were much closer than most of us first believed, we hope the enjoyment of this album may allow those who feel the funk to feel the rock. |
