JOHN LEE HOOKER. born same fifty YearS ago in Mississipi, he began to plaY the guitar in his childhood and then his musical eduction Was çompleted by his stepfather. At the age of 14 he left bis familly and practiced several trades without however forgetting his ideal-music. During the War he settled in Detroit where he was employed by "Mator City", It was Ihen that his Career began. Very qUickly his sound became popular and his recordings ,immediately obtained a huge succesS. John Loo Hooker sings and plays in a very personal style. The depth of expression and the feeling expressed in his recordings give him a permanent place In the world of music in general and In that branch of American music known as Country Blues.
SAM LiGHTNiNG HOPKINS. Barn on Mareh 15th. 1912. in Centeville Texas. He learned to sing by listening to his cousin, Texas Alexander and Blind Lemon Jefferson. A farm laborer for many years, he contented himself with playing and singing as an amateur. He settled in Houston in 1946 and went professional. During tho 1950's he worked as a strolling singer.Roaming the streets of Houston. Although he has rarely left Texas. he had made a few trips to Los Angeles. Chicago. and New York. He has recorded about 200 blues and most of his records have enjoyed great commercial sUccess.
BROWNIE McGHEE. Born on November 30th. 1915. in Knoxville. Tennessee. His father a guitarist, singer, and dancer, taught him how to play the guitar. He travelled allover the United States. hitch.hiking. until 1938. when he Was discovered by one of the executives of "Okeh Records". He made some records in Chicago and then left again for tte South. He met Sonny Terry and began to work with him in April 1939. With this partner he has played and sung in the main cities of the United States and has participated in several European tours.
SONNY TERRY. Born Sounders Tedell on October 24th, 1911. in Durham North Carolina. Blind since 1924. he first of all was associated with Blind Boy Fuller and recorded with him in 1937. In 1938 he setlled in New York, and it was in 1939 that he met Brownie McGhee with whom he has worked ever since.
MEMPHIS SLIM. Born Peter Chatman on September 3rd, 1915. in Memphis Tennessee He greW up in a musical atmosphere around his father, an excellent guitarist and pianist. He began very early ta play the piano under the influence of the pianist Roosevelt Sykes. He soon became very popular In all the black neighbourhoods. His success increased with each year and he recorded more than 150 records in the U.S.A., among others the famous "Everyday I Have the Blues". popularized by Count Basie. Memphis Slim has lived in Paris since 1961 where he enjoys a very great popularity among blues and jazz lovers.
