Ex-Portishead DJ Andy Smith takes his usual crate-digging through the BGP catalogue, picks some of his favourites and simply laces them on two turntables. "Northern Soul is the most uplifting music ever", he stated in an interview. I'm almost convinced. Almost all 25 tunes are up-tempo-ish; they have the hooks & energy that shoul've almost made them big hits in their time. In fact, I'm almost sure I've heard them sampled by the likes of Wu-Tang and Fatboy Slim. And yes, it should almost cost a fortune to own the originals - exactly why the BGP dudes also put out an unmixed double-vinyl issue which some should almost be tempted to buy. Either way, this almost made my day.
