These recordings were made prior to and during Cannonball's tenure with Davis, who paid him the unusual honor of appearing as a sideman on Cannon's Somethin' Else album for Blue Note.
Cannonball Adderley's ebullient saxophone is showcased in this album playing classic songs, in small combos, swinging octets, and backed by string orchestras-from his mid-Fifities output for Mercury and EmArcy.

Verve Jazz Masters 32 presents an introduction to the recordings of Chet Baker.
Although Chet Baker has become a pop icon on his look in the Fifties, it is his sound that will endure longest: "There is so much strength in that beautiful tone and particularly in his time - that rhythmic sense of space and pacing" observes pianist Harold Danko, one of Chet's trusted sideman, in his liner notes here. These A&M, Barclay, and Limelight recordings reveal Chet's remarkable consistency; two tracks recorded twenty-one years apart show that "the sound and conception are timeless - as if he played the two songs on the same date". Chet is accompanied on various tracks by Kenny Burrell, Richard Davis, Paul Desmond, Hank Jones, and Tony Williams.

Jazz in Paris - Vol.07 - Bill Coleman - From boogie to Funk
From Boogie To Funk is arguably the finest album Bill Coleman recorded during the last three decades of his life--decades he chose to spend in France rather than his native USA. The slightly absurd title was apparently chosen through a radio competition, but it does rightly indicate that the emphasis here is on the blues. What makes this unusual among the trumpeter's European recordings is that the band is entirely American, because he was able to take advantage of a visit by the Quincy Jones Orchestra, Just as Coleman was not far behind Armstrong and Eldridge in terms of quality, so Budd Johnson, present here on tenor, was not far behind Hawkins and Young on that instrument. Their partnership here is a great one and when Quentin Jackson uses a plunger mute with his trombone he sustains the profound emotions expressed by his colleagues. The rhythm section is also admirable throughout

Upon reviewing Gillespie's performance in Paris, the Intransigeant newspaper carried the headlines: "Dizzy Gillespie, the 'be-bop' champion, is coming with his 'atomic' orchestra to give a concert in Paris." In Combat magazine, Boris Vian began his review saying: "Dizzy Gillespie and his orchestra played last night at the Salle Pleyel to a full house, in an extraordinary atmosphere of enthusiasm and high fever. With Dizzy Gillespie, be-bop, the latest stage in jazz music, has conquered Paris." Giants are definitely ageless, but curiously enough, if you plunge them into a bath that takes them out of their usual routine, they get younger, Dizzy was no exception.

Jazz In Paris - Vol.13 - Django Reinhardt - Swing 39
Although the war was raging when Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France recorded these tracks in 1939, their light-hearted swing on standards such as "Jeepers Creepers," "Tea for Two," and "My Melancholy Baby" recalls an earlier, more peaceful time. Reinhardt and Grappelli trade solos as if they are giving each other presents. They sound as if they are in a friendly competition to see not who is the fastest or flashiest, but rather who can play the most elegant, musical lines. This CD contains multiple takes of a number of songs, including "Japanese Sandman," "I Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight," and the Reinhardt composition "Twelfth Year," but Reinhardt and Grappelli's inventiveness keeps them from sounding repetitive. Their intros and solos are different each time, and you get the feeling they could have recorded the same song a dozen times and come up with 12 different, but equally perfect, versions. The tracks on Swing 39 are among the last recorded in Paris by Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Within a few months the group would be split up by the war, with Grappelli spending the duration in London and Reinhardt trapped in Paris. These tracks are a fitting tribute to not only a great band, but also to an era that was soon to disappear forever.

Jazz In Paris - Vol.14 - Mary Lou Williams - I made you love Paris
Mary Lou Williams is easily the most honoured and well-known female instrumentalist in jazz so far. Her career started in earnest with Andy Kirk's Band for whom she was not only pianist, but also staff arranger. Many people believe that it is because of her arrangements that the music of the Kirk Band is still heard today.
She was very influential with a lot of younger jazz performers who she constantly helped and encouraged. Her latter days were spent teaching at Duke University in North Carolina, she died in 1981 at the age of 71.Her most famous composition was her Zodiac Suite, which was performed by the Dizzy Gillespie Big band at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival.
This particular CD has her playing I many different settings from solo piano to quintet. On two of the tracks British singer Beryl Bryden is heard, this was something of a surprise as she has mostly worked with more traditional organisations, however everything works out fine. In all the different groups the talent of Mary Lou shines through and she certainly was a top class performer, I particularly liked the trio version of Memories of You, the up-tempo Lover and the solo piano on Small Hotel. On every tack however she exudes professionalism.
It is nice to have something from Mary Lou Williams in the library, she was a woman who lived for her music and her chosen music was jazz. She made a major contribution to its enhancement both as a performer and arranger.
