Cosmic Charlie is Charles Free aka the Savage Young Taterbug, this young traveler punk weirdo, his shit is really really good, dude is on a perma reality trip, he does a band with Garbes called Dune Buggy thats a slayer too if you like classic fun lovin pop and rock n roll. Taterbug tape will drop in the next batch this week sometime......but yeah Taterbug, couldn't say enough good things, and as far as lifestyle being part of the deal, dosn't get any deeper then that dude, one and the same, feel like if you don't know him you only get a small portion of the picture. Him and Jeff both in IC right now is a good scene. ~Shawn Reed (Raccoo-oo-oon, Wet Hair) runs the Night People label! http://www.imposemagazine.com/bytes/listen-taterbug
Couldn't be more excited about this one, first offering from the smoked out styles of Iowa City's very own Savage Young Taterbug. Teenage road warrior, dead head punk, perma triped wanderer, Taterbug lays down his tape collaged world of free flowing Americana psych bliss. Little bells, dustbowl ballad guitars, stand by me youth cult dreams, and Manson family mind fucks, its all here, even hope for a better tomorrow and a positive spirit for today which can say alot in these droned out wasted times. Let the light inside yr skull. Artwork by SDREED.
Well Taterbug is back with another release for Night-People. Even more dust and grime this time around, even more Americana smoke collecting in the recesses of your brain while you soak up these torched tunes. The dirtiest heartfelt heartland music you will ever hear... played by Taterbug... teenage wastoid mother fucker... Huckleberry Finn/ Peter Pan creep... lost in a cornfield for life searching for that mystic tee pee in the sky filled with pretty young boys and drugs.
Dune Buggy is Ryan Garbes and Charles "Taterbug" Free, expanding on both members obsessions with classic garage, punk, and pysch rock tunes and images. Dune Buggy is the pop realization of these obsessions. 20 minutes of catchy organ, guitar, and drum driven punkers delivered in Iowa City basement scum style haze. Cleaner then you think it will sound but with enough grit to keep it grimey, who new these two could play it this cool? Teeny bop, youth cult Armageddon rockers. Expect more on NP and Gel by Dunebuggy in the future. Artwork by RGarbes.
New DuneBuggy via the Garbes/Taterbug axis, two longer jammers. A side is DeNudes loner guitar vibes transitioning into a short garage punk stomper. B side is Dunebuggys best moment yet, a long upbeat organ ripper, raw and on the spot, hazed, sad and heartfelt. Art by RGarbes.
Taterbug's space side project, pretty similar to his taterbug stuff except the cosmic-to-dustbowl ratio is more heavily on the cosmic side. Mindblowing to say the least, everything charless free gets his hands on is pretty amazing. "Smoked out child star tape anthems, songs to hold his hand too". "This is Cosmic Charlie 11 in a series of 25 tapes made to be the secret soundtracks to my summer of love... music for brotherless children." "PROOF A BOY CAN BE A SIREN TOO" - Thurston Moore More joyous fuzz ambientance from a truly wonderful label "Night People Records". Cosmic Charlie is a one man tape jams, thats part D. Johnston, part C. Manson. He mostly goes by the name The Savage Young Taterbug and has a super sweet tape out under that moniker.

!new tater and robedoor tapes: http://www.raccoo-oo-oon.org/np/ Charles Free rambles even more than usual on his latest Taterbug release, abstracting his porch-based and jack-o'-lanterny psychedelia into some frontier-based nightmare, heavy on the ghost town feelings but with the damaged Americana and weird little brother eclectism of Boys Of The Feather. Apparently he's building some sort of shack out in the backyard of Night People/Wet Hair's Shawn Reed yard-- a perfect space for the early morning ranch wails he's so good at channeling with this modern, relatable lo-fi!
When I first heard The Savage Young Taterbug, I thought it was some of the weirdest noise I've ever heard. If you took an old Elvis record, stomped on it and then let it hang out in a rain storm, that's what Taterbug sounds like. His cassette releases on Night-People are "of-the-moment" thoughts, creaky acoustic guitars with warped vocals humming along, a defunct member of Blues Traveler ... or something like that. I thought that if I reached out to the man behind the music, I might receive some clarity. I was wrong. His answers have only added to the mythology that is The Savage Young Taterbug. --------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- First off, what does "The Savage Young Taterbug" mean to you?
