1977 - 1983 Ralph Records The Residents

300 pieces of this 1-hour show were sent to radio stations. No artwork was included.
Only printed sheets which contained track listings. In 1983 Ralph Records began to
sell copies to the public. The first 100 pieces came the same as the original. The second
pressing of 700-800 pieces listed the contents on a white card in the cassette box.
The final edition of 1000 pieces has a blue card listing the contents.

The Tunes of Two Cities is a Studio album by The Residents released in 1982.
It is part two of the Mole Trilogy.
Rather than forwarding the story of the battle between the Mole People and
the Chubs, the record's concept is to display the differences between the
two cultures through their music. The music of the Chubs is light cocktail jazz,
while that of the Moles tends toward industrial religious hymns. A major
feature of this album is that it was one of the first to use the E-mu Emulator,
one of the earliest commercial digital samplers.[wiki]

The True Meaning of Brumalia - The Residents
The 12 Days of Brumalia was an internet event put on by The Residents in 2004 to celebrate the original Christmas
that the Roman Church adopted. Thousands of years before Christ, pagans (or heathens, or whatever) worshipped
the sun. The shortest day of the year was December 21st. When they noticed the sun returning for longer periods
of time, they celebrated - on December 25th. They exchanged gifts in decorated boxes, sang songs, played games
and feasted. They also believed mistletoe, holly berries and wreaths (round like the sun) were sacred and used them
to decorate their houses.
-From Residents.com -- "The Roman Catholic Church absorbed the Brumalian rituals around 350 A. D. In the fifth
century the church ordered Christmas to be celebrated forever on the Brumalia, December 25, inasmuch as no
certain knowledge of Christ's birthday existed. The birthday of the sun, became the birthday of the son.
-What you celebrate is not important. The important thing is to notice the circle, the cycle of life and acknowledge
it with a bit of celebration. Each human is allowed a limited number of year cycles. Make this year count and do
something cool."
-Ralph records did release a limited number of cd's (less than 500) later the following year. It's not really a holiday
album and contains elements of both newer and older styles of The Residents. This a must have and one I really
wish they'd re-release.

The Residents: Animal Lover '05
Animal Lover is a studio concept album from The Residents. The point of view presented is from animals
watching some of the human misery that animals escape. I think a broader question asked by this cd
might be considered whether or not human intelligence really is such a superior attribute.
"The wonderful package that the disk comes with a 52 page booklet, original illustrations, careful design
and a free second cd with remixes. Every song has a short introductory tale about an animal, chicken,
bat, dog, cat, monkey, on the main role. Then, the song itself tells the story from their point of view of
the human in the story, such as the mouse who lives at the hospital where the girl goes to see her dying
father; the cat who loves the son of its master, and misses his voice when he stops talking after he returns
from the war; the ant living in the garden of a man, who is so obsessed by his tulips that he has forgotten
everything else in life." --taken from an Amazon review
The Residents realized very early that cds needed to offer more, even if it was for no other reason but cds
could offer more. The Residents packaged interactive shows, artwork, games and books as equally integral
to the whole concept as the music was. Just downloading the music could be comparable to only listening
to a soundtrack of a movie. It's missing the detail, context and visuals. I don't know of any other musical
group as dependant on the viewer having the whole show like The Residents are. A challenge is that their
releases tend to be limited runs, with few re-releases or internet only productions that will never have an
offical physical product. The lesson is to get them while you can.

According to the Cryptic Corporation, Imaginary Jack's full tittle is:
"I stood at my window staring at an arcing streetlight. A sudden wind made me pull my shoulders
to my ears. I pissed into the dark. It smelled like canned tuna. My swollen lip throbbed. I could still
taste the blood. My eyes rolled back looking for memories. I stopped.
"I was changing details in my mind, remembering only what I wanted it to be, not what it was.
I had only a short time to do what had to be done, after that it would all be forever absorbed by
my imaginary Jack."
It is one song, but it is divided into six parts as a convince for the listener."

From the liner notes: "to neither vilify nor sanctify the book, but to allow it to be humanized." Wormwood is another polished concept album that is accessible for mainstream tastes, except for the content that explores the darker side of the Bible. Some people hate this release because of that and others say The Residents are accurate. I have no idea. Any concept of organized religion fits into a spooky, cultural-terrorist nightmare for me. The closest I've gotten is FSM. If I hadn't found this album online, I would never have listened to it. The tunes are quite catchy and I related to many even without having a religious bias.

The Residents: Freak Show Special Edition
The Residents enter another phase and this time it's using the cd format for multi-media. Both Freak Show and Bad Day on the Midway (which I don't have) contained interactive content, like a game, allowing those that bought the physical cd to interact with the characters. So just downloading the mp3's is missing half the content. I don't know if the cd's will still work with vista, but I've heard the mac version is still operational.
This version is the special edition released to mark The Resident's 30th anniversary which included tracks from the live show. The animation was done by the late Jim Ludtke, creating another reason for owning the cd.

The Residents: Heaven? 1986
Heaven? and Hell! were a 2 disc series of compilations put together when The Residents left Ralph Records. They weren't meant to be the "best of", but instead focused on the dual nature of The Residents and their variety. They were a nice addition because the tracks included material previously recorded on guest artist's releases such as Renaldo & The Loaf, Snakefinger, Fred Firth, Nessie Lessons, etc. I just have Heaven? to offer. It would be great if someone could post links to Hell!

The Residents: Whatever Happened to Vileness Fats?
Whatever Happened to Vileness Fats started out as a video project in the 70's
but video advances (VHS) outdated it faster than they could shoot it and they
retired the footage they had -but never forgot it and in 1984 The Residents released the soundtrack for it.
The story concerns a town named Vileness Fats and the love triangle between
an Indian priestess who lives forever and a schizophrenic one-armed midget
(his mother is the only person that knows he's two people).
Tracks 12-20 were the soundtrack for The Census Taker, a low budget horror
film directed by Bruce R. Cook and The Residents first commercial movie score.

The Residents: God in 3 Persons (1988)
The Residents begin a new chapter with God in 3 Persons by developing their narrative talking-blues style which
uses a chorus to add comments and the music becoming illustrative for creating the emotional mood for the story.
-This is about Colonel Tom Parker's (Mr. X) discovery of siamese twins (one female and one male) who have magical
healing powers. After he convinces them to tour and let him manage their careers, he begins to lust after the female
twin. However, the twins turn out to be less naive and more worldly than what he was lead to believe, leading to a
shocking climax. (I'm not going to tell you what happens if you haven't heard this disc before.)

Разумеется, эксцентричному парню не приходит в голову обратиться в полицию. Он принимается за поиски самым непростым путем. Создает серию видеороликов, в которых показывает комнату своего брата (тоже явно не из офисного планктона), и рассказывает обо всех важных, на его взгляд, приметах, которые могут помочь миру в освобождении брата.
Сериальные ролики выложены на сайт The Residents и на Youtube. Лирический герой The Bunny Boy мучается от самых тяжелых подозрений, всячески рефлексирует. И это отличный повод для многозначительных позвякиваний, гулких театральных диалогов, вневременной и внежанровой электронно-синтетической подкладки.
Усваиваемость нового материала такова, что впору поставить The Bunny Boy рядом с весьма успешными Demons Dance Alone (2002) and Tweedles (2006). Отличный альбом для ночного прослушивания, именно такой может быть поп-музыка в снах неизлечимого шизофреника.
