Skaters / Yellow SwansHumming Lattice Flowers [JYRK, 2005] http://massmirror.com/6d4095e904af2665c769...4d226c1bbd.html The Yellow Swans deliver a practically swoonsome drone, haunting and mysterious, with simple plodding percussion, occasional elctronic filigree and moody Eastern sounding guitar melodies. So nice. The Skaters take the noisier road, with a clangy clattery blown out soundscpae of distorted drones, buzzy fuzzy electronic whir and heavily affected disembodied vocalisations. Thickly layered and weirdly otherworldly.

James Ferraro (The Skaters)Dreams [New Age Cassettes, 2006] http://massmirror.com/173ad968d800dca535c2...a4202465ff.html Those of you familiar with the Skaters, already know they are masters of the free floating murk, a clattery chaos harnessed into dense smears of sound. A while back we reviewed a 7" by the Pan Dolphinic Dawn which definitely hints at what you can expect from Dreams, mostly because it's the same person, James Ferraro, one half of the Skaters, and Dreams is another example of the leaf not falling very far from the tree, but that's definitely okay, since we love basking in the murky muted shade of the Skaters' sound.
If anything, Dreams is a bit murkier, less active, more of a drifting murmur. There's definitely lots going on sonically, but Ferraro renders all that action in subtle shades of grey and greyer, melodies, and voices, and riffs and whatever might be part of the overall sound, enter a whole new world once they're captured by Ferraro's four track. It's a bit like sitting at the foot of an empty well, watching storm clouds drift back and forth way above, constantly altering the ambient light, dusky, to dark, to darker, to pitch black and back again. Creepy and haunting and ominous but also strangely beautiful.

Clear Limited to 50 copies Europe-only album from James Ferraro of The Skaters/Lamborghini Crystal et al, the first run ever presented under his own name. Clear presents some of his most transparently beautiful synth work in the vein of Klaus Schulze, JD Emmanuele, early Krautrock et al… the first half is pure unanchored tonefloat bliss while the second brings in fast hand-drum rhythms and a kind of modal 1980s casio/bass guitar feel that makes it sound like a weird DIY new wave group’s take on Popol Vuh’s Affenstunde. Very beautiful and highly recommended.

Discovery Discovery is packaged as a companion volume to Clear and feels like an extension of the modes first extrapolated there, with hypnotic rhythms driving crystal-complex keyboard patterns through endlessly reflective hall-of-mirrors style sonic environs. The album becomes progressively denser as we approach the second half, with what could almost be a backwards re-staging of Faust’s “Krautrock” fed slowly into the nearest wormhole. Another monster.

Virtual Erase Virtual Erase is a heavy Industrial mind-fuck with classic slimer vocals, klanging, manic drums, bubbling keyboards and jarring sections of electro-convulsive static and eerily smeared ghost voices. One of the most amphetamine-charged instalments of the latest batch, all rendered in a high-speed hallucinatory style.

Postremo Mundus Techno-Symposium From the front cover art alone it’s pretty apparent that this release is an extension of his amazing earlier Edward Flex side, with alien-faced musclemen teleported to an imagined Acropolis via steroids and Budweiser. The track titles take the whole sick city/dystopian cheeseburger USA vibe to a whole other level – “Computer Chipped Police”, “Surveillance Society”, “Public Execution Of A No Mark”, “Seventh Book Horsemen” – while the sonics combine bass guitar, thunder cracks, Nazi-fied marching songs, triumphant horns, video game asteroid explosions, tape-warped muscleman grunts and meathead vocal chants. The effect is as horrifying and confusing as the post-microwave culture that James both worships and abhors and this is some of the most startling black nightmare psychedelia of his career. Utterly singular.

Marble Surf Marble Surf is described as a “synthesised choral piece in two parts”. It has a beautiful pop-gospel feel, with keyboards circling insistent, timeless melodies (the slightest hint of Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream”) while angel voices and male vocals reverberate in great arcs of song from a couple of miles above. Aspects of this remind me of the final weird gospel loop on the Skaters’ side of the RRR California box set combined with the elegiac settings of his earlier Excel work but it somehow goes beyond both of those into a realm of such celebratory, melancholy beauty that its hard to put into words. It’s a profoundly moving work by James, easily a contender for one of the albums of the year and the most affecting reification to date of Brian Wilson’s concept of a ‘teenage symphony to God’; utopian dream pop exotica of the most impossible, otherworldly kind. Up there with the music of Albert Ayler, Terry Riley, William Basinski et al. Absolute genius and enough to reduce you to tears. Highest possible recommendation.

Multitopia “Multitopia is our reality system,” James writes in the liner notes. “A post 9/11 reality technology in between the frames of data reception. A cross wire into ‘new head’ and necessary evolution upon the impact of the towers”. It feels like a major work from James, the first fully-conceived album to go beyond his initial brain-fried 1980s nightmare culture documentation, reconciling both dystopian and utopian mindsets in a vision of Pan as Multitopia. Body modification, the blurring of sexual persona (via cracked images of James on the back with a modified pair of breasts chilling next to an arcade game) and cyborg intelligences are all recurrent tropes in James’s work but here he explodes them all, with some of the most aggressively nuanced keyboard and drum work of his entire career, kicking off with a full kit sound that sits somewhere between Industrial steel drums and chaos pads then building to an evocative peak that then dissolves into wave after wave of fluxing keyboard drone and oddly looped vocal fragments. The gravity of the music is truly omnivorous, devouring drone, punk, new wave, Industrial and minimal synth modes and spitting them back out as intensely detailed black and white visions of the future now. James somehow manages to interweave vacuous TV announcements and cheap anchor man quips alongside the lucid, microtone rich keyboard work, situating the whole deal in a virtual, godless netherworld with each track a further descent into hell. It is both beautiful and horrifying. A major work from James – no one is doing anything remotely like him. Due for a vinyl reissue soon, but this is the first edition that you will soon be eating rocks to afford.
