World Music is now a buzz term, but the interest in this concept began with players like Bela Bartok, Modest Mussorgsky, and in jazz, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis. The 1970s saw so much of this kind of thing going on - one thinks of John McLaughlin with his solo projects like My Goal's Beyond and then Shakti, Oregon, Don Cherry playing bizarre instruments from Tibet on projects like Eternal Now and Relativity Suite, and then Hassell.
This record was one of the earliest CDs,from 1983, and its Hassell's use of precorded samples and computers to create compositions in a modular way that makes this album so interesting. The music is like a soundtrack for a film, extremley gentle and slow moving, with dense textures of precorded raga and gamalan rhthms embellished by Hassell's (backwards?) trumpet and Abdou Mboup's percussion. The engineer Dan Lanois plays as big a part as the musicians.
The personel and cover art by Mati Klarwein, who painted the popular cover art for Santana's Abraxas album and did a few covers for Miles, indicate this album was really a continuation of the ideas he explored in Earthquake Island, which was made five years ealrier (also with art by Klarwein). There are liner notes by Hassell which explain the technical and artistic realites involved in this project which sound incredibly dated now, but must have been massively difficult at that time.

"This rare album is a soundtrack composed by Jon Hassell for a theatrical play written by Federico Tiezzi from texts by Jack Kerouac, and performed at La Biennale in Venice, at the Teatro Malibran on May 28th 1982. The CD was released by "Materiali Sonori" in 1995.
In the booklet, Jon Hassell comments upon his musical project: "The style of music which I call "Fourth World" is a continual exploration of ways in which exotic musics from the tribal cultures of the Southern Hemisphere might be fused with the technological possibilities of the Western world (primitive future). It is an attempt to create music which dissolves the dichotomy between the structural and the sensual (classical and popular in western terms).
The music for Sulla Strada is partially inspired by cerimonial music of the Beti and Bemileke of Cameroon. This is blended with other compositional and less geographically-specific elements in an attent to create a kind of musical scenery which is not entirely "primitive", not entirely "future", but some place impossible to locate either chronogically or geographically. (...)"

"25 years after his highly influential “Power Spot” album, Jon Hassell returns to ECM with his collective Maarifa Street and some spacious Fourth World dub-montage music, his uniquely vocal trumpet sailing forth into mysterious soundscapes. Jon Hassell describes “Last night the moon” as “a continuous piece, almost symphonic, with a cinematic construction” and drifting “clouds made out of many motifs”. Core material is drawn from a session at Studios La Buissonne near Avignon in April 2008, with detail added in Los Angeles in November and December.
