Few instrumentalists dominate and define their instrument like duduk player Djivan Gasparyan. In Gasparyan's hands, the Armenian oboe (carved from apricot branches) takes on a warm, spiritual tone that sounds at times ethereal, at others spirited. Until now, we've heard Gasparyan either solo or with minimal accompaniment (namely, his collaboration with Canadian guitarist Michael Brook on Black Rock). But on Armenian Fantasies, Gasparyan performs with his largest ensemble yet, a group of 10 traditional Armenian instrumentalists. The results are mesmerizing. On the "Armenian Suite," we get a catchy medley of folksy love songs; "Kamantcha Blues" is a shorter, more introspective work of improvisation; and "Armenian Romances" focuses on the country's more melancholic songs of longing. With each track, we hear the meditative, shadowy sounds of the duduk, along with indigenous instruments such as the tar (lute), kamantcha (fiddle), and kanon (zither) played at their peak. This is a lovely, serene, contemplative album. If you're unfamiliar with the duduk, at least for me, I'd describe it as having a hint of the biting tone that so many of the oboe-family instruments from Asia have, but crossed with that soft serenity of the species of Native American flute that R. Carlos Nakai plays. I love those oboe-family instruments that are all over Asia, but I know some people seem to feel they are too abrasively reedy. You won't feel that way about the duduk.
You're not going to dance or even tap your toes to this album. This disc is for sitting back and oozing into a couch or a bed and zoning-out. Just let it unfold around you in the dark as you think about whatever you need to think about.

"It can be both a blessing and a burden for a musician to embody a
universal mood or feeling. Take Armenia's Djivan (also spelt Jivan)
Gasparyan. Once heard, the plaintive sound of his duduk is
immediately identifiable. Half-flute, half-oboe, its mixture of
reediness and luminous breathiness evokes a piercing melancholy - a
sense of luxuriant, almost masochistic desolation - that has been a
favourite with soundtrack composers from Gladiator to Hotel Rwanda.
While this must have done wonders for his bank balance, it has also
obscured his importance both as an innovator and a traditional
musician with more than 50 years of concert experience.
Described on its first release in 1992 as "one of the most beautiful
albums ever made", Moon Shines at Night teases folk melodies into
semi-improvised rhapsodies, with multi-tracking drawing out an
extraordinary array of sounds. Incorporating fragments of live
