This flowingly well-sequenced collection of semi-acoustic tracks, some of which have a smoothly mainstream FM-radio feeling while others are more roots-oriented, is just the thing to unwind after a stressful workday or get the weekend off to an effervescent yet relaxed start. South African troubadour Vusi Mahlasela and Senegalese pop icon Diogal are heard to great effect, as are Congolese stars Faya Tess and Lokua Kanza, entwined in a lusciously Cuban-rumba-influenced duet. A lesser-known Cape Verdean songstress named Gabriela Mendes swings her way through a typically dance-like ditty and Dobet Gnahorй of Ivory Coast makes a similarly strong impression. A previously unreleased tune by Angelique Kidjo of Benin rounds the set out; every compilation should ideally offer something new, not just retreads, so this is definitely a good thing. Another important selling point: a portion of the proceeds from this album will be donated to Mercy Corps in support of their efforts to help victims of AIDS and the civil war in Darfur, and to Oxfam America and Oxfam Novib's "Make Trade Fair."

asing styles of music from African countries colonized by Portugal, this compilation doesn't feature the most famed musicians of the representative nations, but it's a uniformly strong collection nonetheless. Cape Verde's morna and coladeira, Angola's semba and kizomba, Guinea's gumbй and Mozambique's marrabenta are among the genres of music represented. Standout Guinean vocalist Eneida Marta brings a laid-back maturity to her phrasing on "Na Bu Mons." Bidente's "Considjo di Garandis" is an impressive mix of African blues and flamenco. Ruy Mingas is a blast from the past who hadn't recorded in 30 years, as is Zй Manel, whose slow bluesy "Bu Fidjo Femia" is culled from 2001's Maron di Mar, his first album in nearly 20 years. This blend of Portuguese and indigenous cultures didn't happen under the best of circumstances, but there is no doubt that it's produced beautiful music.

The label grew out of Putumayo clothing company, founded by Dan Storper in 1975 and sold in 1997. Co-founder Michael Kraus joined Dan to launch Putumayo World Music and establish a non-traditional sales division. Putumayo World Music has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music characterized by the company's motto: "guaranteed to make you feel good!" Putumayo's CD covers feature the distinctive art of Nicola Heindl, whose colorful, folkloric style represents one of Putumayo's goals: to connect the traditional to the contemporary. With Acoustic Arabia, Putumayo turns its attention to the more organic, traditional styles that are the foundation of these musical genres. With their stripped-down arrangements and softer, more introspective quality, the songs on Acoustic Arabia highlight the fundamental beauty of the music of the Middle East and North Africa. This collection features an intriguing roster of artists, including several international stars and exciting new discoveries. Each musician has a fascinating life story that brings added depth to their music. One of the best-known featured artists is Algerian singer-songwriter Souad Massi, whose contemplative songs address social and political issues and were banned by the conservative government. Maurice El Medioni, a world-renowned Jewish piano legend from Oran, Algeria first began performing alongside Arab musicians during the golden age of the Algerian music halls of the 1940s and 50s, and is still tickling the ivories as an octogenarian. The band Tiris hails from Western Sahara and is made up of refugees who have been part of the struggle to reclaim their homeland from Morocco which now controls the region. The gentle emotion and entrancing melodies of the songs featured on Acoustic Arabia will help listeners deepen their appreciation for the rich music of this part of the world. A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to the Sa¿d Foundation in support of its efforts to bring positive and lasting change to the lives of children and young people in the Middle East.
