Biography:
Multi-instrumentalist and dance guru Chris Brann, who is the mastermind behind other garage/house tasks such as the Wamdue Project, Wamdue Kidz, and P'Taah, spawned another house-bred project in the late '90s, aptly titled the Ananda Project. The Ananda Project was originally a side thing until Brann was sought out to write a song for the dance label King Street. The song turned into a working relationship with singer/songwriter Gaelle Adisson, and the Ananda Project was underway in 1998 with the cut "Cascades of Colour," and the second single "Straight Magic" followed a year later.
Accompanying the group's sensual soul and vibronic R&B are Heather Johnson, Justin Chapman, and Terrance Downs. Johnson, who is a formally trained jazz vocalist, is a sharp addition to Downs' silky urban grooves, which are layered among Chapman's spiraling DJ cuts of cosmic soul and sonic trip-hop. The brooding electronic sounds composed by the Ananda Project have also caught the attention of fellow DJ forerunners like Danny Tenaglia, John Digweed, Pete Tong, and David Morales. In fall 2000, Chris Brann and company stayed close to King Street to issue the debut Release. Tracks from the album were remixed by the likes of King Britt, Blue Mar Ten, Blaze and others for 2001's Re:Release and Brann curated and released his Inspirations compilation on the Karma Giraffe a year later.Morning Light appeared in 2003. by MacKenzie Wilson
Ananda Project - Release (2000)
Chris Brann's Ananda Project keeps the grooves intact on Release, a sultry look into big beat layered over trip-hop loops and urban vocals cunningly similar to the Brand New Heavies. Simultaneously attractive and raw, Release connects the brisk drive of hip-hop with deep acid jazz elements. Songs such as "Breaking Down" and "In" include crisp female vocals from Caron Wheeler, while others like "Cascades of Colour" speed up the tempo for a stronger dub feel. Like Todd Terry, Chris Brann's Ananda Project stands apart from more generic forms of house. Ananda Project - Morning Light (2003)
It takes a remarkably incredible sound to impact numbers across the world, but "Cascades of Colour" immediately upon release became the track used to invoke the most emotion out of a set by a world's fair of top DJs including Tenaglia, Digweed, and Deep Dish. Its producer, Atlanta based Chris Brann never intended to create Ananda Project, yet the house community wasn't willing to let such a song be the end to what ended up a beautiful beginning.
I first found Ananda Project on Finnish DJ, Jori Hulkkonen's Helsinki Mix Sessions. There was a track that haunted me with its exquisite assemblage of house, jazz, soul, and tribal, its organic melody staying with me until I fed myself more with their debut Release, which grandly lived up the almost unbearable hype of "Cascades of Colour".
Ananda Project is the type of music that makes a bad stereo system sound good, the type in which people stop to ask you what's playing, it's house music for those who claim no interest in the genre, it's music that makes you dream. The incredibly soulful singers that Brann brings in again on Morning Light, such as Terrence Downs whose smooth vocals encapsulate with eerie reminisce to all that is good in 112, a voice that's in the same room as you with a closing of the eyes. Such a deep sound that he pumps into "The One", a song that you can only wish to reproduce as beautifully in your head. Heather Johnson, a voice that carries an internal rhythm that can stand up to it's accompanying dozen orchestrated melodies. Also bringing in Nicola Hitchcock, (formerly of Mandalay) whose ghostly voice amazingly matches the sharply hypnotic tones in "Can you Find the Heart".
Ananda Project puts forth an engrossing production of thoughtful and sparkling aspects of electronic, house, tribal, jazz, and soul. Meticulously planned clarity that paints a calming and euphoric landscape in your mind, it'll bring you to nature when you're stuck within industrial walls, it'll bring you to peace in times of pressure, it'll soothe you into music-listening oblivion. Ananda Project - Relight (2005)
Just as Chris Brann followed up his debut album, Release, with a remix collection, Re-Release, he followed up his second album, Morning Light, with Relight, a seamlessly mixed collection of remixes from that album that comes with an accompanying bonus disc of yet more remixes, these dating from between 1998 and 2005. All of this amounts to a whopping 22 tracks of Ananda Project, almost of all of which, amazingly, are on a par with Brann's standard output, if more inclined toward dancefloor play. For that reason, those who prefer his up-tempo house work over his more chilled-out album-listening work will savor the first disc of Relight, as it plays like a standard DJ mix, albeit one of nothing but Ananda Project tracks and one that lets the tracks play out to near-end before a quick fade (that is, DJ mixing that emphasizes the tracks, not the mixing itself). A few of the tracks are previously unreleased, including the back-to-back run of "Wasting My Love" and "Everything You Are (Atlanta Rising)," which gets the mix going in high gear early on and gives Relight some distinction from its source album. Moreover, a few of the tracks on the first disc are outsourced mixes, by Gabriel Rene (as Aquanote), DJ Spinna, and Eric Kupper, though these producers don't depart too far from the Ananda Project style. The second disc is likewise mixed DJ-style, and is a bit more eclectic. A couple of the mixes here are previously unreleased, and a good half of them appeared in their original versions on Release. Outsourced remixers here include Richard Morel, Wally Lopez, and Kyoto Jazz Massive. While a great many of these sort of dance remix albums are tedious cash-in efforts that appeal mainly to disciples and completists, Relight is an exception to the norm -- one that is just as enjoyable as its source, if not more so, given its dancefloor emphasis -- just as Brann's consistently excellent output is exceptional among his innumerable house peers. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
"Smooth House has never sounded so good." This is not the quote that someone might expect hearing concerning an Atlanta-based production - then again, maybe it's time for a change. The Southeast US is increasingly dominating the global music market with its world-class studios and eternal wealth of underground talent. Dance music is just another genre of music to surrender to the awesome power of the force: wait, strike that.
Atlanta-based producer Chris Brann ads fuel to the fire of an already brightly-burning flame; his Ananda Project is one of the most celebrated names in house music, a brand name whose singles continue to slash and burn their way through the house-jock charts. This new addition to Brann's victorious catalogue of sounds also proves to be a champion. With disc 1 containing new and unreleased music from the Ananda moniker, disc 2 contains throwback favorites and reworks from the recent past.
Disc 1 begins with Twilight - an abundance of tribal instrumentation and percussion that instantly prepares the listener for the deep journey that awaits. A Relight mix of Secrets features swooningly sexy vocals from Marta Gazman; soft rhythmic house grooves set the pace. Mixing straight out of the previous sounds, the tribal percussion and chants of Wasting My Love are elevated even further by the by the soulful harmonies of Heather Johnson and Terrance Downs. The funky electric bassline bouncing 4/4 of Everything You Are turns the heat up a notch; I should also mention that Ede Wright steps in to swing the track out with a few grooving electric guitar licks, while Clive Stevens adds his own smoky touch on Soprano Sax. Big Boat continues to rock the jazz/Latin sound with Terrance taking the lead vox again. Lydia Rhodes gives the R&B styled Suite Dreams wings, and Heather Johnson's trippy vocals echo over the very dark and tribal sounds of I Hear You Dreaming.
Justice, Mercy has Terrance pleading his soul, while the deep house of Brann's production rumbles on. ICU is a deep funky groove featuring DJ Spinna and an assortment of synthetic instrumentation and vocals. Hitting a slightly clubbier tone with Kiss, Kiss, Kiss, Heather and Terrance both wail to the rafters. The album continues to wind its way out on a harder note as Terrance Downs adds vocals to Shouldn't Have Left Me. Terrance Downs bring back the funk on The One, and vocalist Nicola Hitchcock finishes us off with a very groovy track entitled Can You Find the Heart.
Disc 2 (Selected Works) begins with the acid-laden club-house of Breaking Down (Morel's Pink Noise Vocal Mix), an immediate attention grabber. It's one of those vocal tracks that would move a 4am graveyard (house jocks take note). Cascades of Colour (Wally Lopez Weekend Radio Mix) is yet another harder synth-bass single that has that certain edge that would snuggle in nicely with any tribal, prog/trog, or deep house jock set. Taking a more tribal turn comes the rocking rhythms of Falling For You (G-Pal's New York Mix), directly followed by the deep gospel house of Glory Glory (Timewriter's Saints and Sinners Mix).
Again with the Big Boat - this time it's a broken-down Relight Acoustic Dub. Breaking it down even further is the minimal Afro percussion of In the Skies (Wamdue Mix Edited Edition). Tangerine gets us back to the club-styled house side of things and features hot Afro percussion matched with smoky male vocals and jazzy synthwork. The funk-groove and broken rhythms of Bahia (Kyoto Jazz Massive D&B Mix Edit) offers a different sound to standard 4/4 of Wamdue's other works. The smoke-filled and loungy nu-jazz sound of Fantasy Suite finishes us off like a cool breeze over a sun drenched beach.
So, another album from the Wamdue Studios has come and gone, only proving that amidst sunny Atlanta's blossoming urban declaration, the sound of house music can be heard echoing loud and clear for the world to groove to.
