A nice EP from Glasgow based producer Gravious
Another huge drop from the relentless Hotflush / Scuba massive
surely the most productive Dubstep imprint of recent times. "Fall"
spans the a-side here and despite its best efforts to drag you back
into dark autumnal evenings manages to evoke a hazy melancholy that
would be no doubt best enjoyed outdoors in sweltering conditions
It's a track that relies on musical elements that aren't often
associated with this scene - shimmering Rhodes and sudden changes
all primed to tug at the heartstrings, despite the fact that all
along the bass weighs proceedings down to an almost impossibly low
altitude. Beautiful stuff. "Winter Sun" is up next and is more
menacing - the chord progressions propelling the track late into the
night, its melody almost sounding like a more morose take on the
theme from Knight Rider. Another brilliant transmission from
Gravious and Scuba - get in

Bumper 4-tracker from newcomer iTAL tEK for Planet Mu. This is the
Brighton based producer's debut 12" and is the perfect introduction
to his 'darker' sound, and as the rest of the scene moves into a
more 4/4 direction we see iTAL tEK taking things into the basement
and adding a sizable chunk of noise into his productions. It reminds
me of when the whole Renegade Hardware sound took hold of drum 'n
bass, and that's no bad thing - there's always space for growling
distortion and a bad attitude in my mind. I guess Vex'd and more
recently Cloaks have approached this sound, but iTAL tEK brings
enough variation to make this 12" stand out, and far from merely
exploring a bit these tracks have some serious bass weight. You know
what to do - bring the darkness!

Kion drops this latest killer for the Clandestine Cultivations crew
with a shuddering wall of bass dominating proceedings from the off
on the terrifying "Shine". Kion sticks to the recent fascination
dubstep has found with cinematic atmosphere - an oddly effective
blend of indecipherable vocal samples and layered strings making for
a beautifully widescreen yet at all times rugged experience
"Ritual" on the flip is much more direct, a pummelling bassline and
a jump-up template honing itself for the floor, while closing track
"Rocka" is just immense - a clipped Sino marching track that's just
about the sickest dubstep track we've heard in some time. Killer
