Since their 2003 debut Trouble At Mill, Pendle Coven have produced seven exceptional, restless
twelves for the Modern Love label, not including work undertaken by one half of the recording duo
under the MLZ moniker and a handful of projects produced and delivered under the radar. Typified
by an inability to rest on their laurels, Pendle have explored areas of Techno and electronic
music as diverse as their interests, taking in early-90s style ardkore, drone,
Basic-Channelisms, Drexciyan electro and warehouse minimalism along the way. This debut
album features 7 exclusive and previously unreleased tracks as well as 5 killers from the 100
a metre, marriage of convenience, hex and Iamnoman EPs, spanning the last 5 years.
The sound of Self Assessment opens with the disembodied guitar treatment of Aged Drone,
paving the way for the stripped menace of Iamnoman - the title track of their most recent
vinyl-only release. From there we drop in on the staggered proto-dubstep of Unit 6, an alternate
string-driven version of the airy stepper Uncivil Engineering, the immense stripped
reverberance of Optimal, pure bass pressure of "MVO Chamber" and, finally, the towering chord
crescendos of the Berlin-inspired Exigen. All the tracks here have been lovingly honed and mastered
at the hands of Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin, for added bass depth and space.

Anonymity is almost impossible these days, it
seems. 2008 saw Burial reveal himself, Basic
Channel and Underground Resistance became regular
fixtures on the festival circuit and Wolfgang
Voigts moves were covered on these pages almost
daily, the MySpace generation clearly forcing all
and sundry to come out of hiding. Fortunately, not
quite all: The shadowy Pom Pom have been beavering
away in obscurity since 2001, releasing untitled
tracks in text-free, "none-blacker" vinyl-only
editions, no information available aside from
gushing blurbs on the Kompakt website. ("Totally
exciting new techno from Berlin. Drexcia-inspired
genius druggy stuff!")
In a culture currently collapsing from promotion-
overload, this information-void is particularly
appealing. And Pom Poms clunky brand of techno
only adds to the charm brazenly hand-crafted,
functional, but with little interest in fads or
genre conventions, this is weird stuff. It sounds
like the product of Berghain mated with Profan:
dark, reverb-dunked rhythms lost in pools of tape
hiss, divergent patterns causing further confusion,
crudely sampled patches of static. Pom Pom is
Marcel Dettmann meets Marcel Marceau; punishing,
but with tongue-in-cheek and a playful glint in its
eye. If T. Raumschmiere is technos punk-rock, then
Pom Pom is its No Wave.
The CD features 14 tracks, most of them around five
minutes in length, which gives the tunes the feel
of studies or experiments of the sort found on old
sound library collections. Simple themes are
quickly established, then quickly discarded. The
opening track is a waltz, a Strauss lollipop loping
in dank dubstep terrain, until track 2 stomps in,
offering a beautifully hackneyed take on Minus
minimal, the trademark claves and congas lazily
daubed in charcoal. Loops of hiss bleed into
ghostly warning tones in track 5, pseudo Latin
rhythms stumbling over clattering electro breaks,
while track 7 loses grand trance themes in thick
fog, pads and drums distorting, bleeding into the
surrounding mist.
The palate remains firmly monochromatic, all dub
techno greys draped over minimal drum patterns, but
the manner in which these buckle, twisting into
surprisingly obtuse forms, lends vitality to these
simple pieces. The warped arpeggios which stagger
zombie-like all over track 6 are stunning, and
would surely send crowded floors into a frenzy.
Track 8 is just as cocky, with tambourines and
gushing strings cycling like The Field. Track 10
re-examines the riff from Supermayers "Two Of Us,"
submerging it in darker waters and throwing in
ragged jazz breaks to disrupt the flow. Calmer
pieces recall Rechenzentrum or Mikkel Metal, with
stoned rhythms lurching around dying dub pulses and
barbed synth pads. Theres not a bum note in sight.
Or, rather, the bum notes are so artfully deployed
that each track develops skewed and eccentric
personalities, absent from all but the most
innovative of modern productions.

If 2008 was a benchmark year for Ostgut, 2009 is already beginning to feel like
its equal. But lets not get ahead of ourselves. First up: Marcel Dettmann
compatriot and similarly handsome bastard, Ben Klock. As the first Berghain
resident to issue an album on the clubs in-house label, Klock has a granite
weight on his shoulders, even with prior successes like 2007s Scenario double
pack with Dettmann, a few modest releases on Bpitch Control and his
cheekily-titled Before One EP to stoke the flames for this debut full-length.
But perhaps none of those releases prepared us for this. The years first great
techno record, One is a stern assembly of crushed-metal techno and flash frozen
dub-tech that for all of its shadows and unlit passages still sparks with
briefly luminous melodies. Klock designed the tracks last year with an album in
mind, and the result is a work of tremendous cohesion and fluidity. Much like
Shedding The Past, Ones sequencing is meticulous, allowing Klock to maintain
his clubbers momentum without grinding out his gears over the records length.
Its an album of almost monolithic presence and physique, with dim ambient
interludes which offer not so much repose as a sense that some wires have
shorted out, briefly, before everything starts to bang and clatter about in the
black anew. A natural product of Berlin, to hear One is to listen in on the
sound of a factory pulsing away when the workers have all gone home-the
unnatural cadences and tempos of things that are plugged in, gassed-up. "Check
for Pulse"" is all mechanistic throb, thrifty but infectious, while with its
grim symphonic synth stabs and clunky rhythms, "Coney Island" is savage
bump-in-the-night techno. The gentle whorls of synth and faint helicopter twirl
of "In a While" are a bit more serene, allowing enough room for the tracks
jagged Atari melody to collapse under its own sly weight, and "Gold Rush" is
Klocks overt dubstep entry, an elementary cut with more stabs of dim color and
a beat like a chain-gang lumbering by the roadside. Yet for all its severity,
One wouldnt be such an artistic statement without Klocks sly melodic
stitching. "Gloaming" resembles the Bradburian electronic narratives of Boards
of Canada. "Cargo," with its clogged-heartbeat bounce and ascendant tonal lines,
provides a moment of much-needed reprieve. Though the prospect of Elif Bicer-who
appeared on last years Prosumer & Murat Tepeli record-pairing with Klock
initially seemed like a mismatch, Bicers voice is used more for instrumental
layering than as a singer. Her sensual moans provide the slow launchpad techno
of "Goodly Sin" with a fleshy warmth that alleviates some of its sting, while
her voice is anything but comforting on "OK," smeared in echo and dim reverb to
make the tracks motorized whirr even more disturbing. Such is the tenor of
Klocks play on One, that these honey-pie tones sound so bloodless, Bicers
voice like a warm body set adrift in the evernight cold of space.

On the brand new album, "Two", together again as a duo, they are unrivalled.
It's been far too long since the release of their era-defining classic "1st
Album", but wait no more, dear music lover, for they are back with a bang. And
you'd better believe, it's a big, cosmic "bang".
Miss Kittin & The Hacker have not only forged a new path on this impressive
collection of new material, but also, by transforming and remodelling their many
musical influences, they have fashioned a club-based European cyber-pop of their
very own.
The album also features a wonderful, stellar sprinkling of metallic soul,
glamorous space disco, glossy vocal nuances, crystalline beats and swirling
melodies. The music possesses a sexy androgyny, glistening and pulsating. And
the songs? Sometimes narrative, sometimes confessional, direct and alternatively
clouded in mystery. And the lyrics, are they... "blue or grey"?
Let's talk about the songs!
"The Womb". A gently lapping, intergalactic introduction succumbs to a
tumultuous thumping early Madchester style robo-rhythm with Miss Kittin intoning
"Evolution" in her best Shaun Ryder. An opening blast-off.
"1000 Dreams". Begins life in the land of Space's "Magic Fly" and ascends into a
lovely warm euro-tinged track with a nod to Propaganda and classic 80's synth
pop. A beautiful melody line from The Hacker sends the track into the
stratosphere. This is the second commercially available single release from the
album.
"PPPO". Or, if you prefer: People, Pleasure, Objects, Power. Is this what Nitzer
Ebb might have sounded like if they were sexier? This is electronic music at
it's best, bursting with energy, hooks, dynamism and power. Watch out for this
track on a pre-release to the clubs as the first single complete with Function's
(Sandwell District) remix, before the album release.
"Party in my Head". Classic Moroder meets disco era Blondie. On Saturn. A dance
track, which conjures up visions of dry ice, ultra-violet lighting and spinning
mirror ball reflections. There's a constant party in someone's head, somewhere,
is there not? Check this out when it is released commercially as the third
single after the album release date. It will also feature remixes.
"Indulgence". Full-on electro-rock n' roll EBM dance-floor work out. Will sound
extremely dangerous gushing forth from a huge speaker stack in a club. A live
killer.
"Emotional Interlude". An image of Dьsseldorf lingers in the foreground. Miami
(or perhaps Detroit) skyline is in the hinter-ground. Kittin intones a sinuous
mantra over The Hacker's growling bass drones. Gorgeous.
"Suspicious Minds". The spirit of the King lives on in this sweetest cover
version and the first Kittin & Hacker vocal duet. Had he been around, the King
would have gotten on down to this at Studio 54 for sure. In his white suit.
"Electronic City". Original metal beat minimalism (Conny Plank / John Foxx
style) dissolves into the purist of neon melodies. A wonderful and extremely
moving track, contrasting (and then fusing) starkness and warmth. It's all
present here. Berlin... are you listening?
"Inutile Йternitй". Futile Eternity. In which the BBC Radiophonic Workshop
guided by The Hacker has kidnapped Kittin and tele-transported her to Spirea X.
Ultra-Nu Beat for the 21st Century.
"Ray Ban". Potentially the perfect TV ad soundtrack for your favourite
after-hours shades and eye-wear brand. "Is it grey? Or blue?" What is reality?
Sometimes, it's not so easy to tell when one steps out of the club.
"1000 Dreams (Reprise)". A luscious electronic lullaby for the end to a perfect
evening brings the album to a soothing and gentle close. In the twilight of a
listen. A fitting ending to an excellent album.
Miss Kittin and The Hacker hit the road in 2009 and will be appearing live
across Europe from April onwards, hitting the USA in September and then onto
Asia and Australia. Dates to follow.

Mule Musiq are set to release their first compilation that focuses
solely on Japanese artists later this year.
The CD, entitled The Definitive Japanese Scene, is something that
label owner Toshiya Kawasaki has had in mind since the inception of
Mule Musiq five years ago. Speaking about the release, Kawasaki
said in an e-mail that "there are many great producers in Japan,
but it's not that easy for Japanese artists to open up their future
by themselves. Therefore, I thought that this is a duty for Mule
Musiq."
The music ranges from the jazzy broken house of Righteous and Olive
Oil, through to Galarude's chugging nu-disco and melodic tech-house
from Kentaro Iwaki, and is sure to please fans of the label usual
output looking for some new artists to sink their teeth into.

Since their 2003 debut 'Trouble At Mill', Pendle Coven have produced seven
exceptional, restless twelves for the Modern Love label, not including work
undertaken by one half of the recording duo under the MLZ moniker and a handful
of projects produced and delivered under the radar. Typified by an inability to
rest on their laurels, Pendle have explored areas of Techno and electronic
music as diverse as their interests, taking in early-90's style 'ardkore,
drone, Basic-Channelisms, Drexciyan electro and warehouse minimalism along the
way. This debut album features 7 exclusive and previously unreleased tracks as
well as 5 killers from the '｣100 a metre', 'marriage of convenience', 'hex' and
'Iamnoman' EP's, spanning the last 5 years. The sound of 'Self Assessment'
opens with the disembodied guitar treatment of 'Aged Drone', paving the way for
the stripped menace of 'Iamnoman' - the title track of their most recent
vinyl-only release. From there we drop in on the staggered proto-dubstep of
'Unit 6', an alternate string-driven version of the airy stepper 'Uncivil
Engineering', the immense stripped reverberance of 'Optimal, pure bass pressure
of "MVO Chamber" and, finally, the towering chord crescendos of the
Berlin-inspired Exigen. All the tracks here have been lovingly honed and
mastered at the hands of Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin, for added bass
depth and space. Essential Purchase.

Release Notes:
New on Pheeks Montreal-based Archipel Musique label comes this
compilation release spanning the producers work from his very earliest
work up until 2003s Roundabout, Frost and Send. The two oldest
pieces here are Totally and Rout, both from 1999, with the latter
in particular taking in the more experimental reaches of technos outer
limits, mapping out a clinical glitch-like minimalism before there
really was such a thing. Deviating somewhat from the strict 4/4
templates that we tend to associate with Samuels work, Follow Me
(2000) is more closely related to melodic electronica and Member
Jumbloo flirts with IDM, but theres plenty of elasticated micro-funk
in these productions, as confirmed by more clearly defined dancefloor
workouts like Shift (2002) and Smuthe (2000).
