With its thirty-third release, Cadenza grows its family once again, bringing on
board rising talent Ernesto Ferreyra. Born and raised in Cordoba, Argentina, and
until recently based in Montreal, where he came up amidst the MUTEK festival’s
extended family, Ernesto calls Berlin home today. His ability to synthesize new
ideas from diverse surroundings has made itself amply heard on his releases for
Mutek_Rec, Cynosure and Thema, along with remixes for Adam Marshall (New Kanada)
and Monofax (Lomidhigh). Recently, you’re as likely to find Ernesto alongside
Guillaume Coutu-Dumont in the duo Chic Miniature, renowned for their
spontaneous, energetic live sets as well as releases on Raum…Musik, Musiqe
Risquйe and Crosstown Rebels. So Cadenza was lucky to get some time alone with
the young multitasker, who continues to refine his style across four impressive
and infectious tracks for the label. Across all four cuts (two on vinyl, and two
digital-only), Ernesto shows off his uniquely grooving, percussive style. In a
former life, he might have marched in a samba school: shakers and noisemakers
fall in a steady stream over carefully tuned percussion of every shape, size and
caliber; with his slippery rhythms and swerving syncopations, you’re left with
the impression of a parade of drummers from around the world, marching in
lockstep down Berlin’s slick cobblestones. “Hunted,” the most upfront of the
four tracks, lays out a rollicking groove punctuated by hiccupping toms; choppy
vocal samples serve as invocations to move, while rushing waves of reverb flesh
out the tune’s ample dimensions. A simple repeated chord provides the final
one-two punch. Perfect for any hour, this promises to illuminate any set like a
Brazilian sunrise. “Caleza” finds Ernesto digging even deeper into his bag of
tricks. Crafty polyrhythms merge into a snaky cadence that keeps evolving at
every step; midway through, mallet-like tones break out into a triumphant and
surprising melodic lead. With its llush wooden tones, this is an anthem in
tribute to anyone that's ever shaped anything with their bare hands.

is played by a lot of different artists in the house scene. It’s time now to get
into Michel’s journey through sound, which is full of acoustic materials. When
you listen to his music you feel the roots behind it. With La Mezcla, Michel hit
it straight to the middle of what could be called “House World Music". The man
behind the groove is a hedonist.. He grew up with soul music and jazz and up
kept his eclecticism by opening up to rock and techno. Michel Cleis productions
are full of vibrant, joyful and “ethno mixed electronical” beats; he flaunts his
love of shaking music using sampled instruments. His first release on Cadenza

CADENZA 35 "EL DEVICE" by MIGUEL TORO (release 20.04.09)
Cadenza welcomes yet another new member into the fold with its 35th release. Hailing from Caracas, Venezuela, Berlin’s Miguel Toro brings an indisputably Latin touch to his productions, which of course fits perfectly with Cadenza’s aesthetic. In fact, Toro is no mere button-pusher, but a talented percussionist in his own right-throughout 2007, he even served as the accompanist for Samim’s rollicking live sets. But there’s far more than shakers and congas to set Toro’s work apart. Mutating the title of the Velvet Underground classic, “Sissteray” charges ahead with a pumping, rock-steady beat, with plenty of rolling hand percussion to supply the rhythmic nuance. The most notable hook are a pair of repeated vocal samples that hover just on the edge of intelligibility. The effect is like fusing the DNA of decades-old pop into the finely-tuned body of a contemporary drum track-resulting in a powerful “earworm” that glints and ripples like a lean, muscular snake. There’s a curious vintage feel to the track, from its jacking, no-nonsense rhythm to subtle touches of reverb that creak and hiss like a kicked amplifier. “Quassi” is slightly more laid back, but it still stomps like a herd of elephants heading for the watering hole. Toro’s percussive sensibilities are more on display here, with keenly syncopated woodblocks and metallic shakers galore; loose percussion gives the cut its essential “human” feel, with weird, polyrhythmic lines shaping an arc that never settles into four-bar predictability. The samples are nothing short of otherworldly, with garbled voices and gritty rumblings bubbling up from the background, while jewel-toned keyboards veer from a housey chug towards more fanciful lines of flight suggesting all-out space jazz. Despite the wealth of ideas, though, Toro always keeps it simple: every sound works in service of the all-important groove.

Following in the footsteps of Los Updates' 2008 First If You Please,
Cadenza will once again invite a newcomer to the imprint to release a
full-length. Loko was formerly one-half of production duo Lazy Fat
People, but stepped out onto his own last year with a 12-inch for
Desolat.
According to the press release Loko's Cadenza effort, Seventynine,
sounds much the same as his solo work on Desolat: It's a collection of
tracks that "celebrate the communal ideal of dance music with spirited,
percussive tracks." But while Loko aims for the dance floor, he also
reportedly is found "ducking into shadowy corners in search of more
private emotions."
