Review by 'Phil Brook'
It may not be everyone's idea of a culinary delight, but musically speaking this is sheer brilliance. Do you appreciate quiet, melodic ambient music with a beat? A contradiction in musical terms perhaps, but this act mange to combine these differing styles with remarkable success. Everyone enjoys a Liquid Lunch and their musical equivalent is even better than the real thing. Whilst enjoying the album for the first time (it is allowed you know), I was struck by the inventiveness and beauty of the track called Zoe and mistakenly believed that it was going to be the best. Only two tracks later Human Vitalis proves my previous thoughts to be incorrect and eclipses the previous best. I have heard a number of their compositions on compilation albums, but this is their first review in Modern Dance and if the previous albums are up to this standard, then I would love to review them (SUBTLE HINT TO MILLENNIUM RECORDS!) Returning to the latest album, I hope that I will be allowed to make an understatement and say that this is a very, very good album.

Kevin Yost spent the past year in intense musical reflection, juxtaposing the modern sounds of electronica with classic jazz (his original passion). "Future Flashback" is the next level of this brilliant fusion created by Kevin. His first full length album since the 2000 release of "Road Less Traveled" this 14 track album will feature live orchestration as well as a wide variety of studio collaborations. Kevin has promised to make this his best yet and it is expected to be an undoubted masterpiece. Sax & Flute - Howard Burns Vocals - Kristen Mountz
----------------------------------------
Once again, a magnificent mixture of deep jazz sophistication interwoven with natural soul. However Kevin made this record decidedly different than the first, focusing primarily on intricate musical experimentation. Upon finishing studio mixing in Sept 2005, the track listing proved to be undoubtedly one of sheer brillance. From start to finish It takes the listener on a musically adventure, from the down-tempo remix of "What is Cool?" to the bongo percussive mix of "Ever After You" to the electronic rework of "Pendulum. In all 11 tracks will be featured including 9 exclusive remixes. In addition this album will include two bonus recordings originally slated for release on the first album. These include "If I Were Me" which features the brilliant vocals of Kristin Mounz and "An Idea Came to Me" a devasting intellectual spoken word masterpiece.

Xpansions is the banner of Xavier Perec's weekly residential night at NL (Niewerzijds Lounge in Amsterdam). This is his second CD compilation showcasing his smooth and deep, jazzy and funky DJ style. Quality tracks by artists like A Certain Frank, The Big Knife, Sunday Brunch, Type, Jaffa, Boozoo Bajou, Alex Cortiz, Total Eclipse etc. Chilly Downtempo tracks, timeless and stunningly stylish.
The second Xpansions comp goes deeper and funkier than its predecessor, airing a rich selection of intelligent cuts with maximum listening durability. Selected by DJ Xavier Perec (whose residential night at Nieuwerzijds Lounge in Amsterdam and weekly Dutch radio show also both go under the banner of Xpansions), this is the head nodding, herb infused mood music at it`s coolest.

"Our Friends Eclectic" is the title of the second album by Plastyc Buddha, the Antwerp-based band that debuted three years ago with the now classic "Throwing Stones In Placid Pools" album. Like its predecessor, "Our Friends Eclectic" is song-structured and melody-oriented. And very much unlike their instrumental debut album, Plastyc Buddha now excels at… songs and vocals!
"We wanted to work with song structures and focus on vocals," says (singer and Fender Rhodes player) Pieter Verschueren, who started Plastyc Buddha with electronic wizard and producer Stephan Parmentier five years ago. "After all, we're musicians, coming from a background of bands and live gigs. With our new album we venture back to our roots. Our debut "Throwing Stones In Placid Pools" worked as a concept. This new album illustrates where we come from, which is live music."
Verschueren and Permentier started work on "Our Friends Eclectic" in April 2003, after promoting their well-received debut album with a series of gigs. The wonderfully laid-back "Throwing Stones In Placid Pools", released in April 2001 at the crest of the downtempo wave, garnered international appraisal; tracks of the album were licensed to some 50-odd compilations (including NEWS-released series like "Transatlantik Lounging" , "The Night Is Young" and "Your Lounge Your Music"). All in all, a very fancy start to a promising career. "Our Friends Eclectic" takes up the baton and throws it w-i-d-e!
Before the core duo of Verschueren and Parmentier started work on the recording sessions for "Our Friends Eclectic", they obliged a request by a local theatre to accompany Belgian author Kristien Hemmerechts's reading session of her novel "Donderdagmiddag Half Vier" with background music, soundscapes and interludes. Two tracks from that project spilled over to the new album.
So "Our Friends Eclectic" is rather different from "Throwing Stones In Placid Pools". "The debut was sample-based. The new album is musician-based. No samples this time around, all music is played by the two of us, with a little help by Matthias Bastiaens on guitar. As a consequence the recording process was pretty intense," according to Verschuren who alternates with Parmentier on vocals on nine out of the eleven songs on "Our Friends Eclectic".
With their history of live acts - they performed together for years in an outfit called Dub Tales - Verschueren en Parmentier are versed in the band-audience dialectic; and they are at home in a variety of styles. So it comes as no surprise that Plastyc Buddha aches to hit the stage, backed by Matthias Bastiaens (guitar), Frans Van Roey (bass) and Jan Carpentier (drums). The latter replaces former drummer Theo Van Roey who died tragically in a car accident last year September. Singer Lisa Renfrum takes the lead on two tracks of "Our Friends Eclectic".
Pieter Verschueren: "This new album will appeal to a wider audience, since it has vocals and songs. It's more accessible than our first album. It uses electronics in a song-based setting and it shows us as musicians, not as sample wizards. And we'll bring the album to the stage, backed by the live band."
"Our Friends Eclectic" opens up a new chapter in the career of Plastyc Buddha. It's a bold step forward by returning to their natural habitat, the live setting. And although "Our Friends Eclectic" sounds rather different from their debut album, it comes from the very same source - love of music. It follows a dictum of one of the greats (Quincy Jones, in fact): success is the best time to take the biggest chances.
