ЫІ Described by Wire scribe Jon Dale as "Alvin Lucier and Cluster ІЫ
ЫІ collaborating for Mego", the concept of Oren Ambarchi's ІЫ
ЫІ 'Stacte' LP series - now comprising of five volumes - began in ІЫ
ЫІ 1998. The first few 'Stacte' LPs were self-released by Ambarchi ІЫ
ЫІ and featured his earliest explorations of the guitar and its ІЫ
ЫІ sonic possibilities after a period known as a drummer in ІЫ
ЫІ post-punk, noise and free jazz outfits. An idea was explored ІЫ
ЫІ and investigated at length using a spontaneous approach, with ІЫ
ЫІ Ambarchi treating each side of the vinyl like a canvas, slowly ІЫ
ЫІ capturing a moment, patiently teasing every nuance and ІЫ
ЫІ implication from each texture. His method allowed the listener ІЫ
ЫІ to sink their teeth into something substantial over the course ІЫ
ЫІ of the LP side's entire duration, resulting in an otherworldly, ІЫ
ЫІ cumulative impact of patiently unfolding compositions. ІЫ
ЫІ The 'Stacte.3' release (especially the LP's second side) was a ІЫ
ЫІ breakthrough for Ambarchi and it defined the parameters for his ІЫ
ЫІ subsequent projects such as 2001's 'Suspension' and 'Grapes ІЫ
ЫІ From The Estate' from 2004, both released on the legendary UK ІЫ
ЫІ label Touch. 'Stacte.3' is an early glimpse of Ambarchi at his ІЫ

ЫІ I figured I would take a break from catching up on missed 2008 ІЫ
ЫІ releases to write about this fine gem of an album that happened ІЫ
ЫІ upon my mailbox this past Friday. The latest hotly anticipated ІЫ
ЫІ album from Ohio’s ambient/drone prodigies Emeralds is an early ІЫ
ЫІ stunner for 2009. A set of improvisational pieces recorded live ІЫ
ЫІ over the last two years, What Happened is yet another distinct ІЫ
ЫІ entry into Emeralds’ expanding list of fantastic works. What ІЫ
ЫІ Happened is a decidedly more varied affair than their previous ІЫ
ЫІ Solar Bridge album. Opening song “Alive in the Sea of ІЫ
ЫІ Information” is largely comprised of synths. Here Emeralds ІЫ
ЫІ gently carries us across the vast expanses of the ocean while ІЫ
ЫІ we watch the sunset on the horizon. By the time “Damaged Kids” ІЫ
ЫІ begins, we have been cast into the water, sinking for what ІЫ
ЫІ seems like eternities only to discover a lost civilization ІЫ
ЫІ below. Bleeps and boops filter in and out of our psyches, ІЫ
ЫІ seemingly the product of something not quite human. As we ІЫ
ЫІ descend into the forgotten metropolis, large guitar drones join ІЫ
ЫІ in for the ride, increasing tension until heavy bass hits stamp ІЫ
ЫІ everything out. Emeralds saves their best for last on What ІЫ
ЫІ Happened, unleashing two titans of sound to wrap things up. ІЫ
ЫІ Standing in contrast to the doubt of “Damaged Kids,” “Living ІЫ
ЫІ Room” is an embrace of the infinite. Reconciliation to ІЫ
ЫІ uncertainty. Loads of melodic guitar lines and minimal synth ІЫ
ЫІ float about the ether before a gentle tide of guitar drone ІЫ
ЫІ whisks us all away. “Disappearing Ink” is very reminiscent of a ІЫ
ЫІ favorite from 2007’s Allegory of Allergies, “Light’s Cool.” The ІЫ
ЫІ all-enveloping warmth and sense of optimism. Standing at the ІЫ
ЫІ precipice of epiphany. A beautiful, majestic piece, and a ІЫ
ЫІ perfect way to close the album. In the last couple of years, ІЫ
ЫІ the prolific trio of Mark McGuire, Steve Hauschildt, and John ІЫ
ЫІ Elliott has grown to prominence in the experimental music ІЫ
ЫІ scene. Emeralds grabbed the attention of many when they issued ІЫ
ЫІ the staggering Allegory of Allergies in 2007; a titanic swath ІЫ
ЫІ of cavernous-yet-heartfelt drone featuring intricate melodies ІЫ

ЫІ PAIN JERK, a one-man sound project founded by the Tokyo-based ІЫ
ЫІ Kohei Gomi, one of the most esteemed names in Japanese noise. ІЫ
ЫІ His music is a skilfully crafted, ecstatically mechanistic ІЫ
ЫІ electronic storm that irresistibly pulls the listener into its ІЫ
ЫІ colour-saturated flow. Over the years, Pain Jerk has released ІЫ
ЫІ dozens of tapes (mostly on his own label AMP) and a sprinkling ІЫ
