Booting an x86 Virtual Machine from an iPod
Цитата:
IBM has taken the next logical extension of booting Linux from a flash drive. Researchers were recently able to boot Knoppix from an iPod and run an x86 virtual machine in VMware, which provided an easy way to encrypt the whole operating environment. The tests were conducted on a 60GB iPod photo using Knoppix.

s.NO.t,alterman,jiganchik,

Apple iPod

John of Veazie ME (5/1/05):
My 14-yr-old son purchased an Apple iPod 30 December 2004 and the LCD display failed on or about March 29, 2005 (the display had a dark blotch on the left side). Thinking this would be covered under warranty we contacted Apple and went through the process of sending the unit back. Apple informed us that they were not going to cover it under warranty as their service department determined the cause of the LCD display failure to be either an accident or abuse and they promptly shipped the broken iPod back to us.

I spoke with the service center and asked how they could make that determination when there were no visible signs of abuse or trauma on the outside of the unit and the iPod still played music. The service center technician said the LCD screens could break just by having the iPod pressed in between two books in a kids backpack. I asked what it would cost to have it repaired and they informed me that it cost too much to repair and that’s why they shipped it back. They informed me I would be better off buying another iPod.

I asked to purchase a replacement LCD screen so I could repair it myself. I was informed that Apple could not supply the part. In fact I was told that they couldn’t get the part. After searching the Internet concerning broken iPod LCD screens, I found some very alarming posts. Seems there are a lot of folks out there, who just like me, have had the same problem with LCD screens (and hard drives and batteries) and been given the same run around from Apple.

How can a company sell a product with a warranty, if they themselves can’t get the parts to repair and honor the warranty? Apple service center was more than happy to give me a web address of an outside company that repairs these units. This company will not sell you a replacement part either and will only repair the iPod for an extravagant amount of money. How can they get the part and not Apple?

For anyone who may have been told that the high cost of repair was due to intensive labor in repairing this problem, I was able to remove the defective part in less than 5 minutes. I have contacted Apple customer service center at their corporate headquarters several times and each time been given a different reason as to how they determined why the LCD failed and why it’s not covered under warranty.

The latest excuse (25 April 05) being that even though they can’t find any evidence of physical abuse, it was their opinion that a foreign liquid leaked into the iPod causing the LCD display to fail. Ask yourselves one last question. If Nokia, Motorola and Nintendo can build cell phones and gameboys with durable LCD displays that withstand normal day to day activity, shouldn’t Apple? At the very least Apple should provide replacement parts at a reasonable cost. I’m fairly certain they didn’t pay $139.00 for a 4th Gen iPod display.

Nancy of Coventry CT (4/9/05):
Purchased anIPod for $299 and a 2-year replacement policy for $44.99 at CompUSA on 3/23/04. Ipod began malfunctioning (scrolling through song list independently and unable to stop it or turn it off until battery died). Took it back to store. They first said I didn't have a 2-year replacement policy, I had Apple Care. So I went home and tried to fill out the forms for Apple care on the internet and my IPod was not registered.

I found my original receipt which has proof that I purchased replacement policy, took it back to store. They made me take it over to repair area where they filled out a form for it and said their manager had to review it and they would get back to me. 8 days passed. I called today and they said they would refund me $230 since my Ipod is 15gb and they are no longer made. A 20gb Ipod is $299 (the same price I purchased mine for). I feel that they are required to either refund me $299 or give me a 20gb to replace it. The manager was supposed to call me again this afternoon but 8 hours later no call.

If I purchase a $44.99 2-year replacement policy and I am told "If you have any problem with it bring it back and we give you a new one, no questions asked," I don't understand how they think they can get away with trying to give me $230 back on an original investment of $365.66 (IPod,replacement plan and tax). What a rip off!!

Dean of Edmonton, Alberta (4/4/05):
Within a day of downloading the November 15 2004 update for my 10g ipod, it froze. Displayed an icon of a folder with an exclamation point and my computer would no longer recognize it. I read the user manual and trouble shooting guide, where I discovered the problem can be resolved by reformatting the hard drive, so I looked up how to reformat the hard drive. It said that the computer has to recognize the ipod to reformat it.

My ipod is now caught in a catch 22. I went to the local apple store and the service desk told me that it would be cheaper to buy a new ipod than fix it. The ipod is only 14 months old. I lost an ipod, which cost more than $370 CAD. No to mention more than $200 spent on accessories that are designed only to work with the ipod, which are therefore useless.

Mike of Santa Barbara CA (4/1/05):
I bought a 20gb ipod last October and tonight, March 31, it died. Apple sucks.

George of Queens NY (2/12/05):
I purchased an ipod in Feb 2004. by March the same year I was sending it back to Apple to check the battery. They sent it back stating it met their standards. I told them I got no more than two hours worth of play time. I then sent it back in June for the same thing and they just sent back with the same poor excuse. I have yet to get more than two hours playing time from my $500.00 ipod.

Marisa of Port Chester NY (1/26/05):
I puchased the $500 ipod for Christmas for my son who is in the Navy. He had just gotten back from the Gulf. The salespeople did not tell me that beyond 2 weeks the ipod was not returnable. My son just called me from The Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, CA where he tried to return the ipod (he can't use it) and they told him it was not returnable. Everyone else in the world accepts returns...why doesn't MacIntosh? He needs to make this return since he is on the short list for Iraq. How can I go about seeking a refund for him?

Deb of Ashby MA (1/21/05):
The format of the mp3 files that Apple sells only works on their ipod product. This is not disclosed upfront. I have an mp3 player of a different brand, and can download files that play just fine from other tunes' retailers, but not itunes. And they make sending a complaint very round-about, and when you finally figure out how to do it, they never respond.

Misty of Honolulu (3/23/04):
I recently received a 20 GB iPod as a birthday present from my family. The packaging states it is usable with Mac or Windows computers. Under requirements for Windows, it says "Firewire or USB 2.0." However, no USB 2.0 adapter was included, only Firewire. No asterisk marks USB 2.0 to tell the user that the adapter must be purchased. By the terms of the box, the user has meet their requirements by having USB 2.0.

I called Apple Computers Customer Service to talk about this. The first individual was very nice, but unfortunately didn't possess the power to help me. The second individual, Lorenzo, who is a product specialist told me he had "the power to make an exception. But nothing [in this case] warrants it. . .I will not send you that cord." This iPod cost $400. I ended up buying the adapter because the restock fee cost more. However, I feel the advertising is misleading.

Damage Resulting: The USB 2.0 adapter cost $20.

Maureen of St. Paul MN (3/1/04):
My iPod which I paid over $400 for has quit after 14 months. Apple have come back and want well over $100 (with delivery) to replace the battery. You do not get back the same iPod as you sent in. It's ridiculously expensive to maintain this product.

Ervin of Dubai, UAE (1/24/04):
I bought an Apple iPod 40 mg here at the Virgin record store. It is for my Windows PC. There was no dock connector -- firewire to 2.0 USB cable. I cannot locate one in this country. I have written Apple several times and they are impossible to deal with.

They withdrew my complaint against my will on their Internet posting. Apple was not acting responsibly when they did not place this simple cable in their expensive package. I have been trying for over a month to locate the cable. I found one company on the Internet that has it but they refuse to mail to a foreign country.

Apple support sucks. Trying to navigate their Internet system is like following a street map in Cairo. They have been totally unresponsive to my needs. Three other people in my office bought the iPods and they cannot use them for the same reason.

Angela of Los Angeles (1/16/04):
I purchased songs from the iTunes Apple Music Store with the idea of enjoying them on my new iPod, which I purchased from the Apple Store at The Grove in Los Angeles the very next morning. I got home, charged it up and was just giddy to be able to play with it. I even called around to find a store that had the iTrip so I could use it in my car.

Unfortunately I have an old iMac with no internal firewire (whatever that is) and although I have Mac OS 10.2.8 and ITunes 4.1 and am able to use my little purple beast to do everything I need to, it just won't accommodate an iPod. I called the Apple Store to see if I could just buy an accessory to accommodate it, but I was told that I had two options, return the iPod or buy a new computer. Just to be sure I called Apple Support and my friend who happens to be a Mac certified technician and they both told me the same.

After calling another friend with an iPod to get some sympathy, I returned the unit back to the Grove Apple Store, where I was charged a $30 restocking fee. I explained my situation to Brent, the acting store manager, but he wouldn't budge on the restocking fee.
