Olias of Sunhillow is chock full of sci-fantasy spiritualism, built around a story inspired by Roger Dean's flying starships on the Fragile cover. Dean wasn't present for the art (he was always closest to Howe), so the album sports a lavishly illustrated sleeve from David Roe. Prior to this, his first solo record, Anderson had struck a friendship with Vangelis. That friendship would eventually evolve into a successful string of albums for the duo, but more immediate was the influence Vangelis had on this recording. Just check out the opening moments of "Ocean Song". Anderson wrote and recorded the entire record himself, something of a self-proclaimed "coming of age" for the non-musician. So think of it as Yes without the virtuosity. He mostly bypasses rhythm instead opting for layers of texture. Dipping mostly across the strings of harp and guitars, there’s a fair amount of electronics, no doubt a result of Vangelis' influence. Of course, Anderson’s unique voice is front and center. He always penned a good melody and Olias's dozen songs are no exceptions. "Meeting", "Flight of the Moorglade Mover" and "To The Runner" rank up there with the best of Yes' tunes. Most importantly, the album flows from start to finish. Maybe it is Mike Dunne in the engineer's chair to thank, but the cohesion is genuine. Olias was the most successful of Yes' solo efforts, reaching No 8 in the UK charts and breaking the US Top 50.
The album tells the story of an alien race and their journey to a new world due to catastrophe. Olias, the title character, is the chosen architect of the glider Moorglade, which will be used to fly his people to their new home. Ranyart is the navigator for the glider, and QoQuaQ is the leader who unites the four tribes of Sunhillow to partake in the exodus. The album's concept may have been partly inspired by the cover art for the 1971 Yes album Fragile, which depicts a tiny planet breaking apart and a glider escaping into space. Another link to Fragile lies in the fact that both albums have pieces (Fragile's "We Have Heaven") consisting of multiple vocal parts, with Anderson singing all of them.
This swirling, organic mass of an album is the masterpiece Anderson has never managed to match. At the height of his creative powers, but not of his instrumental skills, Anderson produced a landscape that carefully reflected his own peculiar musical culture. Olias glides along seamlessly from one piece to another, showcasing Anderson's uncommon gifts for melody/harmony as well as for songwriting. Together with arrangements that veer from the rustic to sci-fi, the music appears to travel through Earth and space, incarnating the elements of the material and ethereal worlds. The scope of the music is cinematic, freely pursuing concepts to every corner of its vision and fashioning an experience that is as breathtaking for its range as it is for its depth. Few works of art have found such a powerful communion between form and content, where both are truly inseparable, interdependent, as Olias.
Along with Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, this is one of those rare complete and perfect recordings. Jon Anderson was a clear and open channel as he painted this view of heaven onto a tape recorder. I used to put this album on continous play on my turntable so it would be the last thing I heard as I went to sleep at night and the first thing I would hear when I woke up in the morning. It is the sound of your most beautiful dream.

"Yes' debut album is surprisingly strong, given the inexperience of all those involved at the time. In an era when psychedelic meanderings were the order of the day, Yes delivered a surprisingly focused and exciting record that covered lots of bases (perhaps too many) in presenting their sound. The album opens boldly, with the fervor of a metal band of the era playing full tilt on "Beyond and Before," but it is with the second number, a cover of the Byrds' "I See You," that they show some of their real range. The song is highlighted by an extraordinary jazz workout from lead guitarist Peter Banks and drummer Bill Bruford that runs circles around the original by Roger McGuinn and company. "Harold Land" was the first song on which Chris Squire's bass playing could be heard in anything resembling the prominence it would eventually assume in their sound and anticipates in its structure the multi-part suites the group would later record, with its extended introduction and its myriad shifts in texture, timbre, and volume. And then there is "Every Little Thing," the most daring Beatles cover ever to appear on an English record, with an apocalyptic introduction and extraordinary shifts in tempo and dynamics, Banks' guitar and Bruford's drums so animated that they seem to be playing several songs at once. This song also hosts an astonishingly charismatic performance by Jon Anderson. There were numerous problems in recording this album, owing to the inexperience of the group, the producer, and the engineer, in addition to the unusual nature of their sound. Many of the numbers give unusual prominence to the guitar and drums, thus making it the most uncharacteristic of all the group's albums." |

"The album that first gave shape to the established Yes sound, build around science-fiction concepts, folk melodies, and soaring organ, guitar, and vocal showpieces. "Your Move" actually made the U.S. charts as a single, and "Starship Trooper," "Perpetual Change," and "Yours Is No Disgrace" became much-loved parts of the band's concert repertory for many tours to come." |

"The band's breakthrough album, dominated by science-fiction and fantasy elements and new member Rick Wakeman, whose organ, synthesizers, Mellotrons, and other keyboard exotica added a larger-than-life element to the procedings. Ironically, the album was a patchwork job, hastily assembled in order to cover the cost of Wakeman's array of instruments. But the group built effectively on the groundwork left by The Yes Album, and the group had an AM-radio sucker-punch, aimed at all of those other progressive bands who eschewed the notion of hit singles, in the form of "Roundabout," the edited version (sort of "highlights" of the album version) of which pulled in millions of young kids who'd never heard them before. The single clicked, most album-buyers liked the long version and all of the rest of what they found, and the band was made." |

"With 1971's Fragile having left Yes poised quivering on the brink of what friend and foe acknowledged was the peak of the band's achievement, Close to the Edge was never going to be an easy album to make. Drummer Bill Bruford was already shifting restlessly against Jon Anderson's increasingly mystic/mystifying lyricism, while contemporary reports of the recording sessions depicted bandmate Rick Wakeman, too, as little more than an observer to the vast tapestry that Anderson, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire were creating. For it was vast. Close to the Edge comprised just three tracks, the epic "And You and I" and "Siberian Khatru," plus a side-long title track that represented the musical, lyrical, and sonic culmination of all that Yes had worked toward over the past five years. Close to the Edge would make the Top Five on both sides of the Atlantic, dispatch Yes on the longest tour of its career so far and, if hindsight be the guide, launch the band on a downward swing that only disintegration, rebuilding, and a savage change of direction would cure. The latter, however, was still to come. In 1972, Close to the Edge was a flawless masterpiece." |

"Yes' 2002 album Keystudio is a compilation, but one that makes perfect sense. It collects seven superb studio tracks that the progressive rock giant's classic lineup — vocalist Jon Anderson, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Rick Wakeman, bass guitarist Chris Squire, and drummer Alan White — recorded as bonus cuts for the live albums Keys to Ascension and Keys to Ascension, Vol. 2. Even if Keystudio was released to cash in on the 2002 tour by Anderson, Howe, Wakeman, Squire, and White, it doesn't matter because these new songs were the strongest released by any version of Yes in years. "Be the One" and "That, That Is" are from 1996's Keys to Ascension and "Mind Drive," "Foot Prints," "Bring Me to the Power," "Children of the Light," and "Sign Language" are from 1997's Keys to Ascension, Vol. 2. These songs retain Yes' trademark instrumental prowess, but there's a maturity to the cohesive arrangements and the melodies. Most tracks push either ten or 20 minutes, ensuring the adoration of Yes diehards who yearn for 1970s-style experimentation. All seven songs have their share of highlights, but the best are "Mind Drive," "Foot Prints," and "Sign Language." "Mind Drive" stretches out with both soothing, dreamy passages and tough, full-band bombast. "Foot Prints" relies largely on the rhythm section drive of Squire and White and Howe's economical guitar lines. The terrifically tasteful instrumental "Sign Language" is basically a duet by co-writers Howe and Wakeman. "That, That Is" resembles Yes' 1970s work the most, with the exception of Anderson's lyrics, which address drug and violence problems in inner cities, not his usual mystical topics. The only new piece on Keystudio is Wakeman's "Lightning," a brief intro segment for "Children of the Light." Keystudio would have been a smash had it been released 25-30 years earlier. Even casual Yes fans from both the 1970s and 1980s should enjoy Keystudio. Highly recommended."

"The best live album to emerge from the entire early-'70s art rock scene, a compendium of blazing performances covering the previous three studio albums by the group and the accompanying solo career of Rick Wakeman. Some of the performances are superior to their studio originals, most notably "Siberian Khatru," although "And You and I" is something of a disappointment next to the version on Close to the Edge. Virtually a live "best-of" album."

"Yes had fallen out of critical favor with Tales From Topographic Oceans, a two-record set of four songs that reviewers found indulgent. But they had not fallen out of the Top Ten, and so they had little incentive to curb their musical ambitiousness. Relayer, released 11 months after Tales, was a single-disc, two-song album, its music organized into suites that alternated abrasive, rhythmically dense instrumental sections featuring solos for the various instruments with delicate vocal and choral sections featuring poetic lyrics devoted to spiritual imagery. Such compositions seemed intended to provide an interesting musical landscape over which the listener might travel, and enough Yes fans did that to make Relayer a Top Ten, gold-selling hit, though critics continued to complain about the lack of concise, coherent song structures."
