Description: Dischord Records - without a doubt one of the most important underground labels of all times. What began as fun, became a hallmark and inspiration to many of today's current bands. Dischord Records is a role model to new Indie labels starting up. One of the most inspiring aspects of Dischord is the fact that it is run by musicians, and there are also many things put in place in order to keep all aspects of the label fair to the fans and to the bands. It was started out of a house Ian and Jeff were living in called the 'Dischord House'. Founded by teenagers in 1980 to dоcument the music coming out of the D.C. punk community, and despite steering clear of the music industry and conventional business practices and theories, it has managed to continue it's work for over two decades. The label has over 140 releases of it's own and has assisted dozens of other D.C. labels and bands get their music out. Dischord has been a driving force in the world of independent music since the beginning and they are still building the DC scene today. They found a formula. They've stood the test of time. They left a worldwide impression and were inspirational to bands and labels in the strangest places. And this tribute CD proves it. Millipede Records from germany and bands from all over the world started to work on a tribute to this incredible label. We won't give you a track-by-track breakdown of tribute album - we'd be here all day. Itâ?™s not just cover songs - it's a homage to the songs that have changed peoples lives. Some versions closer to the original than others, but all of them unique, interesting, funny and/or challenging. What's on this CD is a group of talented, smart, witty, emotional, in-tune bands who deliver their interpretation of the DC hardcore/independent scene. The songs they chose range from MINOR THREAT to JAWBOX and from DAG NASTY, FUGAZI and the NATION OF ULYSESS to Q AND NOT U. They are varied and attract just as many different independent music fans as they represent different styles and parts of the Dischord artist roster. Po dvou singlech které si kapela vydala na své značce je tu album vydané ve spolupráci s Dischord Records. chytlavý DC emo rock podobný melodičtějším Fugazi, jakoby s Gray Matter vlivem! CORM was a great band from the greater DC area who had a bit of that DC / Dischord sound but went out on their own as well. You will see reviews of corm releases with comparisons to all sorts of bands, most of which have nothing in common. There's a review of thier album, "Audio Flame Kit" from Punk Planet below which does just that. CORM has recently broken up and the members have gone on to form other bands as is usually the case. After Corm a couple of them formed THE ELUSIVE who also released a CD on Shute Records. Unfortunately THE ELUSIVE was very shortlived but their CD is still available and should definitely be picked up. Members of CORM are currently in the Dischord Records band Q AND NOT YOU. CORM - Audio Flame Kit "Beginning with a long, beautiful piece, "Then I Built My Own Violin", somewhat reminiscent of Rodan, this Washington D.C. band then dives into Jawbox/Wreck territory, with off-kilter guitars, a bit of Fugazi in the vocals and passionate, yet abstract lyrics. A really neat album, which manages not to sound like anyone in particular, while incorporating cool things from other bands. "Though I Speak In The Tongue Of Men And Angels" sounds a bit like Jesus Lizard musically, while other songs completely rock out. And, most interestingly, the album is framed by a series of quiet, understated instrumentals with interlocking guitar textures and strange ringing harmonics. Highly recommended." -Punk Planet #16 CORM-"Everything Streamlined" This is a CD only release from Corm featuring over ten new songs, old previously unreleased songs, and all of their songs from 7"s, split 7"s comps. , Etc. Beauty Pill-_The_Unsustainable_Lifestyle
 It's true, "The Unsustainable Lifestyle" is great, and best of all, it takes a few listens for its innumerable qualities to fully unfurl. Superficially, it's an album of skewed, catchy, boy/girl guitar pop with great lyrics (that are just as great to warble along to as they are to sit down and consciously follow). Yes, it also fuses Beatles-y melodies and tricksily Costello-like structural twists with the confrontational, quasi-political dynamic of the Fugazi/D.C. cognoscenti. But more than this, it's also probably the finest album to have dared tackle the mixture of mundanity and terror that typifies contemporary life in the post 9/11 environment. It's also catchy as hell! A bold statement? Witness "Such Large Portions!", in which the narrator deconstructs the act of petting an airport bomb-sniffing dog with such casual, effortless grace that it's as if all human life has been exposed and laid bare (cosmically pathetic coping mechanisms and all). As for the qualms about this record being too cynical to really register, the final track "Terrible Things" concludes proceedings on an extraordinarily pro-active, reassuringly optimistic note: "Terrible things are going to happen", sings Chad Clark. "This record's over, so why not go outside and stop them?". Musically, too, "The Unsustainable Lifestyle" is propelled by a wriggling, senseless innovation - flirting with everything from slanted punk ("The Mule On The Plane"), elegiac lounge-jazz ("Won't You Be Mine"), psychedelic balladry ("Nancy Medley..."), and acoustic song-smithery ("Prison Song"), all the while carving a battered, genre-hopping musical syntax that's entirely its own. There are also a dazzling array of headphones-appeasing sonic tricks which make this album a truly rewarding listening experience (that further reveals itself with every listen). Listen to the hilarious, speaker-traversing bluebird noises on "Won't You Be Mine", the channel-wobbling tremolo that opens "Nancy Medley" or the hyper-percussive groove that drives "The Western Prayer". Truly, it's a hyper-stereo affair, best heard at as loud a volume as possible (or, even better, on headphones). To those familiar with the band's previous (pretty damn special) material, "The Unsustainable Lifestyle" fleshes out those EPs' briefly conceptual retreats into a fully-realised, and expertly linear album. Lyrically and artistically, this album works not only as a brilliant, bent-out-of-shape pop album, but also as a collection of stories, moments, and fleeting thoughts that are lent extraordinary emotional depths. "The Unsustainable Lifestyle", then - You can dance to it. It makes you think about things you wouldn't normally think about. It unravels and exposes modern life. It's catchy. It's innovative. It's dynamic. It's funny. It's a shot in the arm of the breathless indie-rock corpse. It gets better with every listen. It's a headphones album. It's a pop album. It's a complete, start-to-finish affair. What more could you ask of an album? I've had this album blaring every day for the best part of a month. It hasn't aged a milisecond, and not one note has grown stale. My sensibilities tell me that this album will remain fresh and invigorating for a very, very long time to come. |

 Label: Desoto 2004 Since his Dischord days, J. Robbins work has seemed remarkably precious to me, especially considering a backgroung in the D.C. hardcore scene. What's kept me coming back for more is the fact that he has successfully tempered that preciousness with punk aggression and oddly timed pop hooks - a combination I've found irresistable across Jawbox and Burning Airlines. Unfortunately, with Channels I'm finally only left with the preciousness. It's not that these songs don't have elements of Robbins previously displayed genius - they just don't have that aggressive edge that has characterized his earlier work. His choice of "Fear Is Man's Best Friend" by John Cale (whose post VU work is as precious as it gets) as a cover solidified my opinion on this. Don't get me wrong - there's nothing offensive here. There's just nothing particularly exciting to my ears. If you've been hopefully awaiting the day that J. Robbins leaves visceral anger behind, this EP is for you. Label: Atlantic / Wea 1994 Savory is from "For Your Own Special Sweetheart" which is an awesome album. Of my 450+ CDs, 200+ LPs, and 200+ cassettes, that is my favorite album and this is one of the best tracks. Jawbox songs tend to have a stronger bass presence . Kim Colletta is hardly your typical "bassist chick". J Robbins is a great lyricist. For those Jawbox fans that don't have this CD single, get it. Lil' Shaver is a shorter different take on the Big Shave. 68 is a much more different version than that which appears on "My Scrapbook of Fatal Accidents". The bass is a bit more in the background, giving the song a different feel. "Sound on Sound" is also different from "Scrapbook". This CD is definately worth getting. You will not be disappointed. Imagine some kind of Prince/James Brown bastard stepchild raised on DIY ethics and DC punk. Ian Svenonius struts and prances his vocal pyrotechnics all over the funky backdrop, ranting, pleading, whispering, and shouting from his pulpit. I Want Some collects the best of Make Up singles, released on a host of indie labels, and the result, easily their best album, is jangled, whacked out, and splenetic. Though Make Up (like their predecessors Nation of Ulysses) imagine themselves as some kind of socialist-DIY collective, neither their half-baked political rants nor their hip cultural critiques are worth taking seriously. But the frenetic groove they hit on "Born on the Floor," the shake-your-ass stomp of "Pow! to the People," and the agonized soulful croon of "Walking on the Dune"--now that's serious. --Tod Nelson |
