Galactic Into The Deep Review
Album Reviews Posted: July 2, 2015 Words by Dutch Coburn

Creation or Evolution? Maybe just a dash of both. Galactic’s new album “Into the Deep” unearths a distinctly evolved styling creating their most excentric, energetic, and vibrant work yet. Twenty years in the Galactic realm and structure is re-envisioned. The septet has created an evolved texture for their musical format without losing their identity. It’s tracks stand alone as individual artworks; be they soul-filled instrumentals, or a canvas for a welcomed artist. Original band members Ben Ellman and Robert Mercurio, the album’s principle architects, affirm that customary is not the way, branching off into a style that is sure to lead many into Galatic’s tent in a manner inoffensive to the longtime Galatic faithful.

The prevailing feature associating “Into The Deep” as a Jam Band album is limited solely the hand of its creators. Ellman and Mercurio combine their considerable strengths making this album nearly unclassifiable to a single musical genus, incorporating the full spectrum of music into this work. Differing the album from the band’s earlier works is its more conventional song structure. This is contrary to Galactic’s familiar practice of beginning a song and casually drifting off in an improved direction. To be clear, this album is still traditionally melodic. All instrumentals, welcoming features or not, are constructed in complex theory. Many individually instruments act as small factors, but together the composed result is hypnotic.

Confessedly, the Jam Band scene has never been my formative beat. Be that as it may, most all music, not belonging within the poison of popular radio, resonates genuinely within me. Now with that behind us, I comfortably say the following. Galactic has added one more convert to their following.

Galactic cleverly selected a diverse group of artist’s with whom to align, giving them ample room to play. Ranging from likes of legends to what is sure to be the next generation. Some who have yet to hit the millennial milestone on their social media fan pages. The talent is deep and it is diverse with top quality-matched collaborations. The album’s titled track, already released, features Macy Gray and is as rich as to what is still to come. Ms. Charm Taylor, a new name to many, electrically pours soul into potential hit “Right On”. Whether funky, bluesy, or uniquely modern Galatic’s guest list is impressive. Incorporating this array of featured talent serve well. The Provogue Records release will be July 17th and is currently available for pre-order via Amazon.com.

The first collection of new studio music from the relentlessly inventive New
Orleans funk-jam unit since 2012s Carnivale Electricos, Into the Deep
arrives after a well-received trio of Mardi Gras-centric outings. As per
usual, Galactic is joined by an all-star roster of guests, including Macy
Gray, Mavis Staples, JJ Grey, Ryan Montbleau, David Shaw of the Revivalists,
Maggie Koerner, Brushy One String, and Charm Taylor, and while they may have
ostensibly left Fat Tuesday behind, they certainly havent abandoned their
penchant for second-line swagger, as evidenced by the parade route-ready,
brass-and-drum-led opener Sugar Doosie, which wastes little time getting
the party started. More song-oriented than ever, Into the Deep does a nice
job showcasing both the band and the guest vocalists. Florida-based Southern
rock and soul specialist JJ Greys bayou bluster is lent extra muscle by the
thrum of deep, 70s funk thats being churned out behind him, Mavis Staples,
who at the age of 76 can still make gospel sound sexy, lends her
unmistakable pipes to the immaculately laid-back Does It Really Make a
Difference, and the slow-burn title track finds the husky-throated Macy
Gray channeling Tina Turner and serving up an old-school blast of vintage
soul thats as full-blooded and unabashedly nostalgic as it is 21st century
radio-friendly. Throughout it all, co-founders, producers, and arrangers Ben
Ellman and Robert Mercurio sonically map out a NOLA thats as vibrant and
forward thinking as it is steeped in the regions rich culture, cementing
the bands reputation (20 years in) as both innovators and stalwart
defenders of tradition.
