Description:
F# A# ∞ was recorded at the original Hotel2Tango in spring 1997 on a rented 16-track tape deck and supplemented with various field recordings.
In the preceding year, the band had taken shape as a quasi-orchestral outfit involving most of the players that would go on to make three more records and tour the world many times.
This is the first recorded dоcument of Godspeed as a large band and is soaring, fragile, awkward, heartbreaking stuff.
Constellation released a vinyl-only pressing of 500 copies in August 1997, with LP jackets hand made by the label, the band, and various local artisans.
It has since gone through dozens of re-presses, with virtually all of the original packaging elements preserved.
The opening monologue on Side One ("Dead Flag Blues") is taken from Incomplete Movie About Jail, an unfinished film by Efrim.

Packaging Notes:
LP jacket made from 80lb.
burgundy textured uncoated cardstock with blind embossed front cover text.
Three different front cover images (train, water tower, highway lights) are hand-glued on the front cover (original first run of 500 featured black and white darkroom prints; subsequent editions are offset printed).
Back covers are individually hand-drawn with illuminated cross icon and catalogue number and are hand-stamped with Constellation logo; all in silver ink.
Inserts include a penny crushed on Montreal railroad tracks, blueprint album graphic and notes, credit sheet and reproduction of an early GY!BE show handbill - all placed inside a plain manila envelope (original first run of 500 featured acetone transfers hand-printed on each envelope).
Additional 8"x8" insert card of train locomotive image silkscreened in various colours on various recycled papers over the years.

Credits:
Band Personeal
Aidan (drums), Bruce (drums), Christophe (violin), David (guitar), Efrim (guitar), Mauro (bass), Moya (guitar, banjo), Norsola (cello), Thea (french horn), Thierry (bass).
Recorded and mixed on 16-track reel-to-reel at thee mighty Hotel2Tango in Montreal by the band along with Don and Ian, May 1997.

Reviews:
“An album of soothing, repetitious beauty.”
NME

“Existential Morricone-esque soundscapes, wrought by desolate guitar twang, echoey dobro slide, sweetly mournful violin and cello, and an astonishingly patient rhythm section.” (Magnet)

“A slow soundtrack of regret and desire, equal parts morose and expectant.” (Earshot/Exclaim)

“Soundbites cascade eerily into gentle dirges with no static beginning or end, weaving in and around each other.
Musical building blocks are artfully constructed into a greater whole, which is fragile, yet steady in its precision.” (Stylus)

“A moody, atmospheric, romantic soundtrack for contemporary urban decay…
Created with classical acoustic instruments (violin, cello, guitar, drums) using distortion, the harmonics that ride the swell of coloured noise on the opening track are richer and fuller than could ever be achieved by purely electronic means.” (Hour Magazine)

“Godspeed create some of the most emotionally charged music this side of The Dirty Three.” (The Wire)

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - F#A# ∞ - 1998

Release Date: June 8, 1998
Label: Kranky (krank027)
Length: 63:27

re-issue of the constellation lp.
remastered and changed in some areas, with some new material, and some material missing.
completely different booklet/cover/liner notes, but as with the lp, each track is made up of several different segments

Originally released on vinyl in a pressing of 500 on the Constellation label, F# A# ∞ has been remixed and resequenced.
Take the epic scope of Ennio Morricone, the artsy slash of 17 Pygmies, the desert tones of prime Savage Republic, bolster the mix with the rhythmic chugalug of The Ex and add the Canadian tradition of radio drama and you begin to get a hint of what this band are up to.
With twin percussionists, three guitar players, violin, cello, glockenspeil and tape loops, godspeed you black emperor! can make a big rumbling sound or stretch out into delicate filigrees.
The nontet has developed a reputation in their hometown for gripping multimedia shows at their recording and performance space Hotel 2 Tango.
At the Lounge Ax twin film projectors emitted grainy backdrops while the band built up their cinemascope sound world.
The original home recordings were made at Hotel 2 Tango and have been tweaked at Toronto's Chemical Sound studios (with the help of Daryl Smith of Slow Loris).
Two new pieces,"Dead Metheny" and "Sad Mafioso," have been recorded for the compact disc.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Slow Riot For New Zerø Kanada E.P. (12") - 1999

Release Date: March 8, 1999
Label: Constellation Records (cst006)
Length: 29:00

cd released on kranky, vinyl (ep) on constellation. vinyl comes in a foil stamped jacket - side one (moya) plays at 45rpm, side two (BBF3) plays at 33rpm.
cd doesn't name the two tracks or actually mention gybe! (other than in the liner notes).
the hebrew lettering on cover says "tohu va vohu," a reference to biblical creationism.
"bbf3" stands for "blaise bailey finnegan III," a variation on the name of former iron maiden vocalist, blaze bayley.

Description:
Our second vinyl-only release from Godspeed contains two long songs, and sets the bar for the sprawling compositions that would characterise the group in the years to follow.
Side A is cut at 45rpm and features “Moya”, a broiling cascade of upward scales that repeatedly explodes beyond its own threshold.
“BBF3” on Side B clocks in at 18 minutes, and was the band’s most lyrical, multi-movement music to date — more elaborated melodic figures wind around an angry spoken-word field recording (infamously culminating in the recital of the speaker’s poem — verses lifted straight from Iron Maiden).
Both songs were recorded with Dale Morningstar at the old Gas Station studio in Toronto.

Credits:
Personnel:
Aidan, Bruce, David, Efrim, Mauro, Moya, Norsola, Sophie, Thierry
Recorded and mixed by Dale Morningstar at the Gas Station in Toronto. Master botched by Metalworks in Toronto, rescued by Constellation and GYBE!

Reviews:
“Impossibly beautiful music for plain impossible times.” (NME)

“Haunting and precise, this is an impressive, horrifying work of musicianship and catharsis.” (Broken Pencil)

“Although Godspeed's music incorporates improvisation, it certainly isn't jazz; although it relies largely on rock's instruments and vocabulary, it's not rock, either.
It's the first music I've heard in a long time to make me feel that new, vernacular musical languages are slowly working themselves out.” (The New York Times)

“Godspeed's music evokes America's vastness and variation, while remaining critical of the way the state swings its wealth and weight against the individualism it purports to protect.
In 28 minutes spread over two tracks, Godspeed…create instrumental passages that reinstate a sense of awe before its geographical immensity...
Their contrast of beauty and hatred is heartbreaking.” (The Wire)

“The band's unified thrashing is particularly breathtaking, and its atmospheric theatrics often take on a much-larger-than-life sonic identity...
Dramatic, focused and exuding a most innate physicality, the band is a living soundtrack just searching for the proper film on which to bestow its havoc.” (Magnet)

Presenting two new pieces from the Montreal collective known as Godspeed You Black Emperor! Consider this a travelogue of sorts; across the expanses of North America or inneer landscapes not so easily charted.
The sonic crests and swells that this nine piece band achieve, along with their overwhelming live show, is apt reminder of the physicality they work with.
Guitars, drummers and a string section coordinate together with a nimbleness that defy expectaions one might have of such a large ensemble.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven! (12") - 2000

Release Date: October 9, 2000
Label: Constellation Records (cst012)
Length: 87:21

double cd released on kranky, double vinyl on constellation.

Description:
After two years of constant touring and near-unanimous critical acclaim, Godspeed You Black Emperor! assembled a collection of new recordings that charted the creative evolution of the band as well as its literal physical movement on the road, criss-crossing North America and Europe.
Five expansive full-band compositions are framed by various field recordings, tape manipulations and ensemble pieces in a return to the narrative sonic collage techniques that marked their 1997 debut (F#A#∞).
Four seamless sides of vinyl unfold a world of aching sadness and beauty, with musical quotes ranging from heartland americana to mitteleuropa folkways, all distilled through the unique sonic filters of Godspeed’s pedal-crazy orchestral rock instrumentation.
Harrowing guitars, plaintive strings, pulsing basses and explosive drums combine with glockenspiels, horns and tape drones to form an overwhelming palette of sounds, always driven by fierce melodic momentum and intense emotional resonance.
GYBE! continued to paint on an impossibly large canvas, with an uncanny blend of world-weariness and naive exuberance that spoke volumes about the conflicts and contradictions permeating our political and cultural life.
The tension between humility and hubris conjured an epic scope and a raw hope that such sweeping gestures might survive with some semblance of substance.

Personnel:
Aidan, Bruce, David, Efrim, Mauro, Norsola, Roger, Sophie, Thierry

Guests:
Brian and Alfons: Horns
Recorded and mixed at Chemical Sound in Toronto by Daryl, February 2000. Mastered by John Golden in California U.S.A.

Reviews:
“Imbued with a sense of impossible grandeur, this is undoubtedly one of the most important albums of the year.
Bliss, hope, beauty, sadness and despair are contained herein.” (Platform)

“A continually shifting collage of sound replete with haunting strings, edgy percussion and eerie, often apocalyptic-sounding samples…
Words just aren't enough for this band.” (The Independent)

“A massive, achingly beautiful work, alternately elegiac and ferocious.” (Pitchfork)

“A perfectly realised game of delay and release; a series of thunderous climaxes of guitar, strings and drums tantalisingly held off by softer sections, where snatches of sound-bite reportage give second-hand shape and the impression of meaning to less immediately arresting ambient doodling.” (The (UK) Sunday Times)

“Further demonstrates the band's flair for dynamic, expertly paced, emotionally resonant soundscapes.
Few instrumental acts can claim to create such a palpable mood of unsettlement.” (The Onion A.V. Club)

“Spills over with unbridled emotion…
‘Lift Your Skinny Fists’ is an elegiac statement of this group's search for hope, meaning and humanity in a world that revels in indifference and senselessness.” (Scene)

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven! (2CD) - 2000

Release Date: November 8, 2000
Label: Kranky (krank043)
Length: 87:21

double cd released on kranky, double vinyl on constellation.

It's not unreasonable to say that the Montreal group godspeed Godspeed You Black Emperor! have been one of the most highly feted groups around.
Long awaited would be an understatement in regard to this album.
Appropriately titled, Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven was recorded at Chemical Sounds in Toronto, with 4 track snippets and field recordings added in Montreal.
After months of touring the band is at the peak of its powers.
They've spread an audio net out across the continent, recording the static on the radio, the random airwave proselytizing and the corporate spokesvoice of the service station that are the companions of the long distance driver.
Whether it's rickety piano melody, the gentle foreplay of strings, the roil of guitars and drums, or a reminscence about sleeping on the beach at Coney Island, Godspeed You Black Emperor! work on the smallest and grandest of scales [often simultaneously].

The devotion the band has inspired is not only well deserved, but continues to spread.
Lift... ups the ante with more power [especially rhythmically] honed to perfect by the band's near constant touring.
Nearly two years after the recording of the Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada the band's studio skills have sharpened, bringing the guitars to a howl and the drums to a rumble.
The two CDs work well as discrete units or as one extended work.

Now, though, it is widely available to us colonials in the New World.
Inside the carefully wrought artwork, the CD features fourteen rare and unreleased songs by the roster of the label and then some.
I am uncertain what the Silent Land in the title is, but if you take in the big picture, here is what you get geopolitically: a defiantly Canadian label creating a compilation for a European audience.
All of this amounts in America to a not quite palatable offering from a country whom we consider our slow cousin to the north intended for a continent whose countries are quite a bit more worldly and refined than America these days (if you can judge a country by its current administration, that is).
Perhaps it is the reactionary and reckless American brashness in me, but I would still not hesitate to dump this album off the side of the nearest tall ship into the murky depths of Boston harbor.
I would even throw some tea overboard along with the CD, just for old time's sake.
The songs on this compilation sound largely like throw-away material, dredged from the dregs of each artist's sound bank.
Consumers will not doubt be tempted to purchase the album on the basis of Constellation all-stars like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Exhaust, A Silver Mt. Zion, and Do Make Say Think.
Unfortunately, these bands provide some of the biggest disappointments.
Godspeed's uninspired live recording of "Outro" might be hampered by the imprecision of the, well, live recording of it, or it might just be a substandard composition.
The sound is warbly, ill-mixed, and not up to the angelic and anthemic standards of the band's studio persona.
Nor does it approximate the live experience of seeing the band perform.
A Silver Mt. Zion offer a wall of noise with some strings operating underneath it all, though at an almost indiscernible level.
Le Fly Pan Am in collaboration with Tim Hecker and Christof Migone execute one of the more pleasing songs for the compilation: the perhaps haughtily titled "Tres Tres 'Avant'" is a bouncy and nearly danceable number with about three of four different aural levels of interesting sounds going on simultaneously.
Some of the more obscure artists here might catch the ear of the more attentive listener.
1-Speed Bike, Frankie Sparo, and HangedUp all seem to threaten songs of quality, but punctuated by the flotsam around them, it can be a little deceptive and hard to tell.

Godspeed You Black Emperor образовались в 1994 и выпустили 6 релизов - альбомов и EP, достигнув пика творчества в 2004 c выходом альбома Tiny Little Hammers.

They don't sleep anymore on the beach. wavecry.gif

Let me tell you what justice is.Justice is the law.And the law is man’s feeble attempt to set down the principles of decency. And decency is not a deal, it isn’t an angle, or a contract, or a hustle!Decency is what your grandmother taught you. It’s in your bones! Now you go home and be decent people.
. . . get out . . .

dpthebest
"Tiny Silver (а не little) hammers" — это раннее название трека "Motherfucker=Redeemer".
