R.I.P. Jason Molina
March 18, 2013 at 10:47 a.m.
Jason Molina, of Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co., has died, as Chunklet notes.
Molina died on Saturday, March 16 from organ failure due to alcohol consumption, according to Chunklet. His last release was 2012's Autumn Bird Songs.
Molina's problems with alcohol were brought to public awareness in late 2011, when the Molina family posted a plea for contributions to Jason's medical fund on the Magnolia Electric Co. website. They wrote that over the last two years, he had been in and out of rehab. He did not have medical insurance, and had been in convalescence working on a farm in West Virginia.

A Song Is Something You Build: Jason Molina in Conversation With Justin Taylor Pt. I
For roughly a decade and a half now, Jason Molina has been among the best-kept secrets in rock and roll. His first band, Songs:Ohia, debuted with a limited edition two-song 7” (“Nor Cease Thou Never Now”) on Will Oldham’s label, Palace Records in 1996. Soon after, Songs:Ohia moved to Secretly Canadian, where Molina has stayed ever since. Between ’96 and ’02 he released nearly two dozen records: a grab-bag of singles, EP’s, full-lengths (including The Lioness in 2000 and Didn’t It Rain in 2002), and split 7”s with such artists as Oneida, Scout Niblett, My Morning Jacket, and Alasdair Roberts (aka Appendix Out). In 2003, Molina re-formed his group as the Magnolia Electric Co., and put out what has to have been one of that year’s best rock records, “indie” or otherwise. Since then, he’s released another dozen or so records (again, across the spectrum, length-wise), some as Magnolia Electric Co., and some as Jason Molina. In 2009 Magnolia Electric Co. released Josephine, a mournful album that brought the band the closest its ever come to playing straight-ahead country. He also released a collaboration with Will Johnson of the Austin, TX band Centro-matic. A fall tour was planned in support of the self-titled Molina & Johnson, but had to be canceled on account of an illness of Molina’s, the particulars of which he prefers not to discuss.

Somewhere along the way, after a lifetime in the American Middle West, Molina moved to London. When I think of Molina’s music, I think of landscapes, and a perpetual tension between competing vastnesses—the sweep of a valley or a shoreline or a mountain; the interior wilderness of a single spirit or heart. But even an enormous space can be intimate, insular, confined in its infinitude. There’s an image I keep coming back to from the twenty-seventh chapter of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth: Axel and his uncle are many miles underground yet find themselves standing on the shore of a sea, the scene lit brighter and stranger than moonlight by luminous vapors that hover near the ceiling of a cavern so huge and high it might as well be a black sky.

In May 2010, after a few preliminary emails, I called Molina in London and we spoke for the better part of two hours. In person, he was as affable and generous as his music is moody and allusive—perhaps moreso. Since there was no particular tour or record serving as the occasion for our conversation, I felt free to range widely with my questions. To put it plainly: I asked all the things that I wanted to know. – Justin Taylor

JUSTIN TAYLOR: How’s London? You’ve been there, what, like a year now?

JASON MOLINA: I’ve been here a couple of years.

JT: Oh, no kidding.

JM: Yeah. How is it? Well, it’s a cultural study, for sure. When I first got here, it was very interesting. I’ve worked in libraries and museums a lot, over my working life. After scrubbing dishes for so long I decided that I wanted something dryer and moldier. (Laughs) All the museums here are free, and so there are some great, great opportunities for me to just stand around and read history books and look at the things in the museums. It’s unlike any big city I’ve ever lived in and I think the last time I’ve counted I’ve lived in over 33 different towns. That’s a hell of a lot for someone who’s not even 40.

JT: That is a hell of a lot. Around the U.S. you mean?

JM: Correct. This is the only place in Europe that I’ve ever lived.

JT: What inspired the move?

JM: A combination of me wanting to take a chance and my wife getting a kick-ass job. So it was like, well, when else is someone going to pay for you to move? I would have moved to about anywhere. I can’t name a city that I wouldn’t have moved to. You could have put me to Ypsilanti and I probably would have taken the chance at the change. But still my heart is really in the Midwest.

JT: I get the very distinct impression that place and region are crucially important to you. Listening to your music, I always have such a clear sense of environment—not always of which environment, necessarily, but of there being one and that the song is in it, or creating it. Josephine was grounded in the south. The Shendoah, and Shiloh—

JM: —Knoxville—

JT: —Knoxville, yeah. Also, I was re-listening to the very first Songs:Ohia album, and I somehow realized that all—or nearly all—the song titles on the album are place names. I’m not from the Midwest, so I didn’t know this by virtue of, like, recognition, but once the idea occurred to me I began industriously Googling the song titles, and I kept getting maps back for places like Cabwaylingo and Gauley Bridge.

JM: All of those are Appalachian place names, places that I have been and wrote songs and where I grew up and where my family is from.

JT: You grew up in West Virginia?

JM: Mostly West Virginia. Between WV and Lorain, Ohio, which is directly on Lake Erie in the dead center in the state, about halfway between Toledo and Youngstown. I grew up with lighthouses and coalmines. I’ve been working on trying to put that into a song, because I grew up in a place where they mine the coal, and I also grew up in a place where they ship the coal to the rest of the country.

JT: There’s a lot of mines in your music, not so many lighthouses at least that I noticed—maybe I just haven’t picked up on them—but one of my favorite things about your albums, and about your work in general, is that there’s these key words or images that recur constantly. I actually made a list of as many of the major ones as I could come up with, and mines was on there. Let’s see what else— stars, flame—

JM: —The moon, the horizon—

JT:—The dark, the desert, electricity—

JM: Crossroads? Did that make it to the list?

JT: Damn, I didn’t catch that one. Okay, it’s on there now. But this is one of the main things I’ve been wanting to talk to you about: How conscious is this process of composition?

JM: Think a second and rephrase that question, because I think I get your gist, but try it one more time.

JT: Okay, I think what I’m asking is, Is it a formal strategy, or is it something you find yourself really compelled to do? I guess you don’t have to go either/or on that.

JM: I think of a song as something you build. It’s not something that you do, it’s not something that comes out of your gut. It’s like you have bricks, you have mortar, you have a trowel – You don’t have a building plan yet, you just have all the raw materials and you just start building it and you hope to god you get something good. But as far as the imagery goes, I’ve always treated it as a rebus. These images all fit into a storyline that is completely open to the interpretation of anybody who listens to it. Maybe you don’t even have to like the music. If you sit down and look at all the lyrics to all the songs, you’ll see that there is a theme, but it’s not running in a straight line. It’s like the dawn coming on, or dusk. It’s always in that purple-grey area. But when I say a mule, I really mean a mule, and when I say the horizon I really mean the horizon.

JT: I love this concept of the rebus. I wonder how that extends from individual songs to building albums, and to what I’ve heard you refer to elsewhere as “song cycles.”

JM: Well, it’s songwriting algebra, I find one angle and that is usually just a song or a riff and I know that it’s going to be the cornerstone for the entire record. So, I have yet to sit down and say “this is going to be the theme of the entire record,” but I’ll write eight songs, throw away seven. One seems to be very interesting and I try to pursue whatever it is that is interesting about that song, and that’s the way I weave the tapestry of all the lyrical themes for each song. I’ve written every single record to be one piece. There should be a side A and a side B. And when I start I don’t know how many songs will be on the record. Sometimes I’ll record ten songs that are thematically related, and then they just never make the record because it doesn’t seem to be a cohesive piece. The worst thing you can do is weave that tapestry and leave some holes in there, where you’re like “I think this song is pretty good, it doesn’t really fit with the others but I’m going to leave it in there.” That’s criminal to me, because it wrecks the beauty of everything else you’ve done.

JT: What is fascinating to me about this is that these ideas sounds a lot like what I hear from contemporary poets. Especially, the idea of, on the hand the serial poem, coming down from Jack Spicer, and then at the same time, which I guess is kind of Spicer also, the chapbook, which for contemporary poetry the chapbook seems to me increasingly like the base unit of composition.

JM: I’ll riff on that. I think chapbooks are amazing. They were the precursor to the independent record label. They are usually put out by small publishers that take great pride in what they do. Down to the paperweight and the artwork and the typeface, they take great care and they don’t care that they are only given only 30-40 pages. They produce these beautiful things.
I am a huge book collector. I probably have, I don’t even want to think, but it’s probably approaching two or three thousand books. I’ve never counted, but my house is full of books and guitars. I think a chapbook is like a music broadside. It’s a beautiful way to present song, and I think that you’ll see an interesting project, hopefully the very next record. It’s going to be a while, because I’ve had some serious health issues, but what I’m working on is something that’s never been done. I’m positive of this. it’s not Luddite, but it definitely harkens back more to the literary world than the music world, and it’s not going to be a book. So you can thank your lucky stars that I didn’t write a shitty book about a horse dying in the desert, because that is probably what I would write.

JT: I’m tempted to ask you for more details, but you seem to have a pretty firm idea of what you’re willing to give away and not. I mean that answer was pretty tightly-constructed, it felt like, as far as saying certain things and not saying certain things.

JM: Well, I’m not being cagey here, but I’ve seen this happen before with other artists that I know – when you state what your next project is going to be and you don’t deliver in a very specific way that fits what is in the mind of each individual listener—they get all pissed off. So If you say, “I’m going to write a record about World War I bi-planes,” and then it turns out all the songs are references to pilot names, and battles, and the types of bombs, and the amount of ammo that they have in the machine guns, that really freaks out people that really just wanted to hear about the bi-planes. So I’ve tried to lay off giving the very specifics. One beautiful thing about being on an independent label – and Secretly Canadian must be one of the best record labels in the world, is that I could hand in a record of me just playing “Taps,” and they would put it out as a record, if I said that that was my new record. It is a beautiful thing when you can give yourself the space, or you have been given the space, to just make a piece of music. I try my damnedest to do that, and I know that there’s a bunch of people sitting there in Bloomington, Indiana who are going to stress out about how to sell this thing. It’s sort of like I’m the cannonball and they’re the cannoneers.

JT: I want to go back to the book collecting. Are there particular authors or eras or anything that sort of guides your collection, or is it more freewheeling?

JM: Sure. 19th century American authors: you name ‘em, I love ‘em. As far as poetry goes, pretty much centered on Irish and Scottish poets. I religiously avoid things like Byron and a lot of the big English heavy hitters.

JT: How come?

JM: They were fucking racists! And it’s in their poetry! I’m not going to stand reading three hundred lines, and figuring out the meter, and getting into the story, then land on this insane racism. I just can’t do it. But I like all the Chicago poets, pretty much anything on the Black Sparrow press. Then as far as the history stuff I collect, it’s sort of like folklore collections. 300 pages of stories about Bachelor’s Grove in Chicago, or Gore Orphanage in Ohio. I love to see the collections of these stories because you can distill them down to pretty much three to five facts that are in every one single one, maybe a name is changed but it is still the same thing. This is a thing passed down passed down passed down, you know. Stuff like that. I believe strongly that that’s what sparks poetry, from the troubadour tradition. I like math books, too. I collect math books.

JT: Math books?

JM: Yeah, like student math books. I like to see a 1923 7th grade student math book, because usually in the back it has a pocket with a ruler, or some kind of notation in there, it just brings me back to the fact that songs are built like that – maybe you’re not going to be Stephen Hawking, but you might be able to build a great song, a song is just a part and a part and a part, that’s all it is, it’s just like writing a book, it’s just the chapters go by much faster.
Music as Seance: Jason Molina in Conversation With Justin Taylor Pt. II

JT: I haven’t asked that much about the music part of the music, only because I really lack the technical vocabulary to do it, I’m a non-musician, but I wonder if you can relate those same ideas in terms of the music. You write all the music, and you play the guitar – do you play other things?

JM: The easiest way to describe it is that I write the skeleton of the song, and that means I basically write the chord progression, and usually come up with the arrangement, I say ‘Well, I think I’d rather have piano or maybe I would like to have bass on this part.’ That’s a very general part of the songwriting that usually comes after the song is basically written, the lyrics are there and they’re solid.
I get in the studio with the band, and let them figure out whatever parts they’d like to play. Maybe Pete the bass player wants to play drums on this song, that’s completely fine – we try that out, and once we get the handle on the basic structure of the song, I kind of throw in the melody. I try to figure it out on the fly.

JT: My own experience of your music, as a fan, seems so defined by this kind of intimacy that almost borders on obsession—maybe “immersion” is a better word. Whether it’s when a new record comes out, or some particular song from the back-catalog that happens to catch my ear, it’ll be this one thing that totally arrests the attention, and you—meaning I—just want to live inside the emotional space of the music, wander its terrain, occupy it, in some sense.

JM: You’ve really hit a nerve there. that’s something that I don’t usually consciously think about, but when I think of a good song I want the band to be able to come into the space of that song and then I hope that the people who listen to it later on after it’s recorded and it’s on the tape, I hope that they can come into it. If you think of the rebus, and then you think of a séance – well, the band are the people at the table of the séance, and we’re sitting there and the song has already left me by the time I get into the room with the people who are going to be playing on the track. I just want to see what this song is going to manifest itself as, if I can be a little bit surreal, but that is something serious. You should leave space in your songs. If I can be off the record for a moment, I’ve been going back and listening to a ton of Hendrix stuff, it was because I saw this photo of him, you know because he was in London for awhile, part of the legend is he came over here and brought a parrot, or a parakeet, a tropical bird, and that was when he was living on Carnaby Street here in London, and putting this band together and kicking ass because he wasn’t doing so good in America, and he let those birds free. So they have bread all over London, and I get them on the wall in the back of my house. These tropical birds that supposedly were introduced by Hendrix, and I was mesmerized by that. This is just folklore, this could probably be stupid, but it’s not like they have snakes here in London, but there is truth to the fact that he had these birds and he did let them out and now they have bread and they’re all over. I went and started studying Hendrix’s lyrics, you know obviously the guitar is amazing, showmanship – you can’t beat it, I don’t think anybody could beat it, but the lyrics are fantastic. When the mountains tumble to the sea. I was like that is so obvious, but then he says eventually (laughs). I saw this photo of him in this gallery; I was just outside the window waiting for my wife to get off work. It was the person who took all the photos of, all the famous Hendrix photos, like, have you ever seen the nude, the one with all the, 15 chicks, all naked, laying all around him? This person has the gallery, or someone who represents him, and this photo of him, and it’s Hendrix and he looks totally cool and whatever, but he’s got a little duffel bag, and it’s kind of unlatched, and inside I can see the spine of Bob Dylan’s songbook, and I was like ‘holy crap, this fucking genie out of the bottle’. He somehow managed to find this songbook, and I bet that’s when he learned ‘All Along the Watchtower.’ He probably heard it on the radio and then said ‘I need to learn this song’. And I was like, it just set me on a path, all the gospel music I was studying, I study like the sacred harp, old white and black spirituals, and I was like, Hendrix was on that path, and I think the guitar was secondary to him, I believe that he really really put his heart into the lyrics, but just happened to be just this warrior of the guitar, I thought it was beautiful. Okay, we’re back on the record.

JT: I would love to talk to you actually about gospel and devotional music. I started thinking about it when you mentioned the séance earlier. It seems to me that there is a strong strain of the devotional or the spiritual all throughout your music, but it is outside any particular religious system that we would know and it seems to me that it really goes all the way back to the beginning with Nor Cease Thou, Never Now. That’s another reference of yours I didn’t know, but figured out it was a reference and looked it up You can tell me where you got it from, but I traced it back to the “Cuckoo Song”, the middle English song celebrating the coming of spring, which seems to have that, you know, not theology but spirituality, in this case pagan…

JM: I associate any kind of music with a deep deep reverence. You will find me in many many churches in the middle of the week just sitting there, and I’m just listening to the music, and if they have a hymnal I’m reading it, otherwise I’m just listening to it. I much prefer that to putting on a record. I find myself just going to where there is this live music, if it is devotional, I don’t have to be devoted to whatever they’re saying.

JT: Let me ask you this: much earlier when we were talking about recurring images and ideas and the building of the rebus, I left one thing out from of list I suggested, which is the ghost, which is probably the biggest, at least in my mind, from going back through your whole catalogue. So I guess my question is: is the ghost as concrete as say, the mule and the mine?

JM: Yes, I see them, talk to them, completely am surrounded by them. I have been in a bed surrounded by these figures just walking around in circles and circles and circles and circles, and I was never afraid. But, for sure, I believe in the chance that some people can see spirits, I believe that spirits would be anywhere, but some people can see them, maybe some people can’t. There is no denying it for me. You can stand in a room – I can remember when I was really really young, my brother saying that I was, like the bed was levitating, shaking and on I was on it. I was just shaking and shaking and shaking. We shared a room by the way—

JT: Older brother or younger?

JM: He’s a little younger than I am. So the next day, he told me, and he didn’t know about ghosts or spirits, or whatever you may call them – a ghost is just a generic word, but he told me what he saw. I had no memory of it, no idea of what had happened. So yeah, I have some history with actual ghosts.
My grandma—who is still kicking, God bless her soul—used to make fucking ammunitions for the army during the war. She has been reluctant to tell me about my grandpa, but he was very superstitious. He put things all around the house. And when I learned this it freaked me out, because I have lanterns, acorns, little holly beads, a piece of silver, an ancient coin, a bell. I collect all of these things and place them around my house. My family just went apeshit over that. They’re like, “how do you know to do this stuff?” You know, garlic in the one place and rosemary in the north corner—I didn’t read a book about that, and I certainly didn’t go on the Internet. I just did those things naturally. I’ve been doing that since I was a kid. I’ve been attracted to all these things over the years, where most people who have spent their life playing music will have rock n’ roll posters, someone sent me antlers, someone sent me keys, someone has sent me vases. It’s all protection spells.
When it comes straight down to any gospel references I do go pretty deep into American gospel because I studied the blues so much, and then I get stuff out of blues song, and I really want to know what they’re really getting at, and it always goes back to straight Baptist bible stuff, but it’s interpreted through an African style, and it is amazing to see that they could take a passage and every single word could be reinterpreted in a way that they would encode. When it says John, that might not mean John – John might be the strongest one, you know? I’m just mesmerized. And I’m not really a student; I don’t have the time to be a student of that, but I certainly have seen it. By the way, I have these Spanish-Jewish songbooks and these Russian-Jewish songbooks and I use them to practice but I can’t read a fucking goddamn word of any of them. But the songs are great and they sound real sad. So okay, I know I took you on a tangent there—what else you got?

JT: One other thing that I was interested in talking about, and there’s not a great segue here, but it’s kind of connected or at least it could be, is cover songs. You haven’t released a ton of cover songs, I have your two Zevon covers (“Werewolves of London” and “Lawyers, Guns and Money”), and there’s that great shout out to Neil Young at the end of “The Big Beast” on Trials and Errors—

JM: And Townes Van Zandt and Tammy Wynette, and that’s it.

JT: And that’s it?

JM: Yep, as far as I know

JT: Well, you would probably know.

JM: I think covers are important; I’ve seen it in its maximum power during the Johnny Cash American Recording sessions. You might notice that my songs did not get covered by Cash, or maybe one did but it’s not been released.

JT: Do you know which song he was thinking of, or if there was one in particular?

JM: Yeah, but I think that Willie [Nelson] took it. Then I did that “Song for Willie”… One of my band mates, Daniel McAdams, did the cover art for the new Willie Nelson record. He’s a brilliant silkscreen artist, he did the first Songs:Ohia record, he played bass with me for years, we shared a place together, so I said, “well, look I did this ‘Song for Willie,’ can you give him this fucking record?” and he did, so at least Willie has that in his hands. “Song for Willie” is, I think, the best song I ever wrote. Ever. And whether or not he ever hears it, it doesn’t matter.

JT: I’ll have to go back and listen to that song again. I was listening to it this morning. I mean I like that song a lot, but—well, I don’t want to sit here and have a fight with you about which of your own songs is the best, but I guess if I was putting a list together, “Farewell Transmission” would be a really strong contender for me. Also “It’s Made Me Cry”, with that one riff. I can’t even tell you how many hundreds of times I’ve listened to that song, which is actually hard to “get lost” in in the way I was describing before, because it’s so short. You have to just put it on again and—

JM: (hums riff)

JT: – Yeah, exactly.

JM: Well, when it comes to that song, and some others like the “The Lioness” and “The Black Crow,” I get a feeling that those are longtime fans hits. But I don’t like playing them. I already lived those moments.
“Farewell Transmission” must be one of the most heroic recording moments of all time, because I called in people that were not already scheduled to be in the band and I was like, “Oh, now we’re going to have a violin player, and we’re going to have an extra singer.” I called out all of these things, much like a conductor does – and trust me, I’m not a conductor. I’m the break man. I will not fuck you up if I am the break man, I just don’t want to move anymore.
We put, I think, about 12 people in a room and recorded that song live, completely live, and unrehearsed. I showed ‘em the chord progression, they had no idea when it would end, and we just cut it.
Steve [Albini] did a beautiful job. I noticed that at one point when it was a little too loud or a little too soft he came and opened a door to make it work, because it was just an ambient recording. When you hear that song kick off everybody knows it, and what’s so disturbing to me is the way that I ended it is I was dictating to the band and Steve—I go “Listen. Listen. Listen.” And then at one point they all stop. It’s great.

JT: I can’t even believe that was done live and improvised. That is absolutely stunning.

JM: I got all my favorite friends from Chicago, and my favorite, good musicians and we just did this record, and it has lasted. It’s got weight, I’m talking 500 pound weight; something you ain’t going to be able to lift too easy. You have to understand we’re working on a string, and Steve is throwing us a bone, giving us the studio and everything, and we are terrified about how expensive it is and he just went the extra mile. That’s the way it works and that’s where I come from. You get the job fucking done.

The hallmark of Jason Molina's career, Magnolia Electric Co., is both a
confluence of all he would create and a line in the sand to mark a shift in his
songwriting approach. It was the last statement under his iconic Songs: Ohia
moniker, and the moment before he began making new legends as Magnolia Electric
Co. for the next 10 years. Now with Molina gone, his work gathers more weight
and meaning. This expanded 10-year anniversary edition of Magnolia Electric Co.
features one never-before-released track plus many rarities.

An year ago, on March 16th 2013, Jason Molina (Songs: Ohia, Magnolia Electric Co. etc) died.
Somewhere in November, the Serbian radio show Pop Depression invited the musicians from neighbouring countries (Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Macedonia) to send their demos of the Jason’s songs they loved and played.
Many bands responded to the invitation and contributed with their cover versions of Jason’s material, and today, exactly an year after the Molina’s death, the whole compilation is offered on Bandcamp as a free download.
Limited CD edition will be available for Record Store Day on April 19, 2014.

releasenotes

Didn't It Rain is Jason Molina's first perfect record. Recorded live in a
single room, with no overdubs and musicians creating their parts on the fly,
the overall approach to the recording was nothing new for Molina. But
something in the air and execution of Didn't It Rain clearly sets it apart
from his existing body of work. His albums had always been full of space, but
never had Molina sculpted the space as masterfully as he does on Didn't It
Rain. Perhaps it is that Molina entered the session with fully written songs
that allowed this emboldened confidence in chance. The creaks and scraping of
strings are all part of the Didn't It Rain choir. So when Molina hoots for
another chorus during the album's eponymous opening gambit, it feels less an
off-the-cuff call, and more an essential piece of the tone and structure.
Midway through the same song, that which takes its name from a traditional
piece popularized by Mahalia Jackson, we hear the long, low woosh of a passing
bus. Distant traffic has forever been a trope of lo-fi, but here, it is a
pristine woosh. The highest of fidelity and sure of purpose. The same can be
said for Molina's always remarkable voice, here settling into a matured,
assured, and subtly lowered tenor. It all adds up to something near in mood to
Neil Young's song "On The Beach," and maybe even Boz Scagg's 1969 self-titled
album laid to tape at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio.
Didn't It Rain is an ode to the Midwest Rust Belt under which Molina was born
and Molina's newfound Chicago home. When we move to a new place, we must truly
confront all our own weaknesses and strengths, and Molina puts that all on the
table with this one. The album's triple-threat center pieces come by way of
"Ring The Bell," "Cross The Road, Molina," and "Blue Factory Flame." Strung
together, they present clearly Molina's specific set of mythological symbols
that had been forming on previous recordings. It is as heady a middle section
as I can recall. But the journey across these three songs -- with their
circling serpents, their neon-flame wreathed moons, their swinging blades,
their debilitating emptiness -- also feels like a cleansing, a catharsis, a
sort of primal therapy.
While demo'd and recorded months before the events of 9/11, Didn't It Rain
does seem to somehow consider the mood of the time. It's surely an album about
setting roots, but it also offers a moment of solace in a time of overwhelming
uncertainty. Here, Molina's now well-known battle with depression aligns with
an entire nation's moment of depression. While even more cryptic and spartan,
Didn't It Rain's imagery and themes can be poetically linked to another 2002
Chicago-rooted album that tapped into the post-9/11 psyche, Wilco's Yankee
Hotel Foxtrot.
This expanded reissue presents Molina's home demos of the record, eight
previously unreleased tracks, complete with a distant playground full of
children chiming in the background for a few songs. The glorious juxtaposition
of Molina's songs' desolation and the blissful playing of children is about as
haunting as it gets, friends.
