RA.317 Benoit & Sergio
Genre: Disco, Electropop, House, Tech House, Synthpop
160 kbps | 54:30 min

Benoit & Sergio are an electronic house and pop duo from Washington DC who have a knack for crafting earworms. Who else in recent memory had you idly humming a song about an apathetic ketamine addict? Or wailing cat-like to a track concerning principles? "Walk and Talk" and "Principles" made it to number #18 and #12 respectively in our 2011 singles poll, proof (if it were needed) that the dance floor will always cherish a chance to sing-along. Across their releases for Visionquest, DFA and Spectral Sound the pair has created a concise discography that seems to indulge equally in their love for acts like Talking Heads and Roxy Music as it does in contemporary electronic styles. This twin pursuit has lent itself effortlessly to live performance. For a relatively new act Benoit & Sergio have gigged globally and extensively over the past two years, utilizing a simple set-up and letting the songs do the talking.
So yeah, Benoit & Sergio aren't DJs. But as they've shown in the past, and again show here on RA.317, they know how to put together a stylish mixtape.

RA.318 Rrose
Genre: Abstract, Ambient, Drone, Experimental, Minimal, Techno
160 kbps | 57:20 min

Whether or not it was by design, the artist recording under the alias Rrose came to define the final phase of one of contemporary techno greatest imprints. Sandwell District called time on their fiercely independent operation at the end of 2011, but not before they'd released three singles and an album from the enigmatic, Duchamp-referencing producer. Primary Evidence - the first of these EPs - hit the club-ready yet experimental groove of its Sandwell District predecessors right from its opening bars; Merchant Of Salt, and in particular its wonderfully insane B-side "Waterfall," was equally as thrilling. However, Rrose's relationship with the imprint was in fact established over his collaborative work with veteran US sound artist Bob Ostertag. Imprint affiliate Juan Mendez (AKA Silent Servant) passed on material to the rest of the group behind the label that would end up forming part of the Motormouth Variations full-length.
"Texture, space and feel" are of primary concern to Rrose on RA.318, a mix that services the head and feet in equal measures.

RA.319 James Zabiela
Genre: Breakbeat, Deep Dubstep, Downtempo, Experimental, Hip-Hop, Tech House, UK Garage
160 kbps | 89:29 min

James Zabiela came up in an era in which a mixtape in the right hands could kick-start a DJ career. This is famously how he got his break when in 2000 he won the Bedroom Bedlam competition in UK magazine Muzik. The excessive care and attention poured into the mix is an approach that's never left him. Zabiela has mixed four compilations for UK specialists Renaissance down the years, each displaying surgeon-like precision in their application of samples, track selections and flair. Yes, we said flair: Zabiela's dizzying technical skills have been his most famous asset, applying a technologically enhanced hip-hop style to house and breakbeats. Zabiela has also been on the books at DJ gear manufacturer Pioneer for years, road testing their flagships models and aiding their design. (As he explains below, his suggestions have resulted in features on the market product.)
So when Zabiela told us that it took him three months to complete RA.319, we were both pleased and a little unsurprised. The mix sees him run a melodic thread through 90 minutes of delicate house and more bass-orientated selections, peppered throughout with samples and field recordings.

RA.320 Shlohmo
Genre: Downtempo, Electro, Experimental, Instrumental, Glitch, Hip-Hop, House, Juke, Shoegaze
160 kbps | 51:40 min

"...a breakthrough for a young producer finally emerging with an individual and inventive style previously only hinted at," wrote Andrew Ryce on 2011's Bad Vibes, the RA recommended full-length from Henry Laufer as Shlohmo. The album had shed what Ryce referred to as a density in Laufer's previous work, presenting 13 tracks that attached hip-hop, shoegaze and lo-fi signifiers to its highly intimate central narrative. Voice manipulation was another of the album's key facets. Laufer later explained that his fascination with sample-based vocal acrobatics stemmed from late '90s / early '00s R&B but also screwed music, the style of '90s hip-hop that originated in Houston and was pioneered by the late DJ Screw and labels like Swishahouse. Laufer returned to Friends of Friends (the former RA label of the month that released Bad Vibes) with the Vacation EP earlier this year, a package that through its remixes - Airhead, Nicolas Jaar - drew intriguing parallels between the LA beat scene Laufer is loosely affiliated with and what was going on much further afield.
On RA.320 Laufer takes his previously stated love for chopped n screwed music, tilts back the heads of hip-hop, house, juke and R&B, and throws gallons of purple drank down their collective throats.

RA.321 Mister Saturday Night
Genre: Disco, Funk, House, Soul
160 kbps | 80:28 min

Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin are the pair behind New York City's Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday parties. Began back in 2008, the events have become known as one of the city's most dependable, and moreover fun, places to hear house music in the city. The party's following and longevity can in part be attributed to Carter and Harkin's eye for detail: across the many different spaces they've utilized down the past few years, the pair brings in their own soundsystem and staff - "to make it feel like home."
This summer "the Mister" has returned to Brooklyn's Gowanus Grove for a series of outdoor events on Sunday afternoons, focussing (as always) as much on showcasing their own tastes as those of out-of-town guests such as Omar-S. As the party gears up for its 100th instalment this coming weekend, Carter and Harkin can also reflect on a successful start to the Mister Saturday Night imprint earlier this year. (Anthony Naples' Mad Disrespect EP, comprised of three roughed-up, hip-swinging house jams.)

RA.322 The Sight Below
Genre: Abstract, Ambient, Minimal, Modern Classical
160 kbps | 78:00 min

The Sight Below is the main recording alias of Seattle-based artist Rafael Anton Irisarri. Wanting to distance himself from the inevitable limelight cast by a release on a larger independent label, Irisarri cut a shadowy figure around the time of his debut full-length under the name, 2008's Glider on Ghostly International. The record introduced his Gas-influenced works to an audience well beyond the confines of the US ambient/experimental scene (Thom Yorke was apparently a fan), its live guitar-fuelled drones making their heavily processed mark upon the wider electronic music world.
Irisarri has since continued to expand upon his light yet arresting approach from his Seattle base, either under his own name on albums like The North Bend and Reverie, or as The Sight Below. The city also provides the backdrop for Substrata Festival, the event behind which Irisarri is the driving force. Began in 2011, the two-day festival aims to "create an intimate space where the boundaries of performer and listener are blurry." Tim Hecker, Scanner and Lawrence English are all set for involvement for the 2012 edition. Irisarri was also in curatorial mode earlier this month with the release of Air Texture Volume II, a two-disc collection on which he was asked to compile selected ambient works alongside Loscil.
Alva Noto, Angelo Badalamenti, Biosphere and Cluster & Eno represent a flavour of the artists featured on Irisarri's mix for us, 80 minutes of music that gently challenges the notion of "ambient."

RA.323 tINI
Genre: Deep House, Minimal, Tech House
160 kbps | 65:15 min

tINI is a key member of the Desolat family, the coterie of artists that has coalesced around the Loco Dice- and Martin Buttrich-helmed imprint the last few years. She got her start on the scene back in 2003, gigging in and around her hometown of Munich and eventually building sufficient momentum to gain the recognition of Loco Dice, who signed her to the label. Residencies for Fuse in London and Ushuaia in Ibiza contributed to her growing reputation in the ensuing years, both ideal places to absorb her brand of deep, groove-centred house music. tINI's studio output has been fairly modest overall, choosing instead to make a statement in the album format. Tessa at the end of 2011, presenting 12 tracks that revelled in all percussive dexterity and textural intricacies we'd come to expect from her DJ sets.
"Minimal house" eventually became a beleaguered term, but in essence what tINI presents here is a masterclass in pared down house music; reminding us that when it's executed with class and sensitivity, channelling the essentials can be truly compelling.

RA.324 Untold
Genre: Dubstep, Electro, Techno, UK Funky
160 kbps | 62:26 min

"As a producer I won't re-use the same sounds or rely on a template for year after year," Jack Dunning told us during his Breaking Through feature in 2009, "and as a label owner I won't release throwaway music." Has he been true to his word? Well, he's now known as one of the UK's most vital DJs, producers and label managers—so that'll be a resounding yes. Around the time of that interview he'd already been moving through the creative gears for a year or two on labels like Hessle Audio, Hotflush and his own Hemlock Recordings. (Listen back to "Anaconda" for a reminder of just how hard he was kicking.) Then came electro for R & S (Stereo Freeze); collaborations with UK funky force Roska and Hyperdub three-piece LV; a dub-wise side project with Samuel Chase as Dreadnought; and 130 BPM-plus techno for Clone Basement Series. Bringing things forwards to 2012, and it's at that last genre Dunning appears to have stopped to explore. The three-part Change In A Dynamic Environment series - the last of which sees release this week - has comprised six confident and evolving techno tracks suffused with Dunning's obligatory perversions.
As RA.324 hopefully illustrates, artists like Blawan, Four Tet, Pariah and Dunning (all of which feature here) appear to be revelling in their techno outsider statuses right now, respectful of the canon but bending things out of shape all the same.

RA.325 Eli Verveine
Genre: Tech House
160 kbps | 63:15 min

If you've engaged with Eli Verveine's DJing the chances are it was through the two guest mixes she has recorded for the erstwhile mnml ssgs blog. In the accompanying write-up for her first mix in 2008, the site noted the timeless nature of her DJing. Four years on and exactly the same conclusion can be drawn. Verveine seems to have a knack for suspending time while she stalks the middle ground between house and techno. The newest tracks on her mixes could easily be the same age as the oldest and vice-versa. Verveine honed her skills in her home city of Zurich, in particular at the Dachkantine club (more on this below) and on the city's Radio Lora.
RA.325 sees Verveine playing exactly to her strengths: a vinyl mix that draws deep upon music from the last 15 or so years.

The drums and arrangements may have evolved around it, but melody has always remained central to Sascha Ring's craft. Cast an ear back to 2001's Multifunktionsebene and it's there wafting over the IDM-informed glitch; fast-forward to 2011's Devil's Walkand it's leading delicate songs you could hear on the radio. In the time between these two full-lengths Ring became one of Germany's preeminent electronic artists. 2006's Orchestra of Bubbles alongside fellow Berliner Ellen Allien hit as interest in the sounds of the city were reaching fever pitch. A similarly Berlin-centric project was conceived in 2009 with the release of Moderat, Ring's collaboration with Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary of Modeselektor. His live solo material had by this point taken on the form of a band, set-up to tour his crossover full-length Walls. The show was expanded upon for last year's Devil's Walk, Ring's most introverted and traditionally structured offering yet.

Space Dimension Controller - 2257 AD
Pional - In Another Room
Tevo Howard - Spend Some Time
Jacob Mikesh Filburth - At the Ranch (Lauer remix)

As he showed on his excellent entry in the DJ-Kicks series, Ring knows his way around a mixer as well. We reckon RA.326 is equally as arresting…maybe even life changing. (Ring will explain below.)

RA.327 Vessel
Genre: Ambient, Deep House, Dubstep, Experimental, Techno
160 kbps | 74:50 min

Vessel is poised to release one of the year's most intriguing full-lengths, Order of Noise, through Tri Angle, one of the year's most intriguing imprints. What's got the young Bristol artist (given name Seb Gainsborough) to this point is an open mind. Leaving aside his various side projects - Panther Modern, Rei, Flexible Ape - his output as Vessel has yielded a bewildering volume of stylistic expressions over the last two years - very often within the same piece of music.
The first contact you may have had with Gainsborough was through an advanced house/garage EP, Nylon Sunset, last year for the then fledgling Left_Blank imprint; a killer Peverelist remix of the title track helped spread the word. Hints of his restlessness smeared the record but it was on further missives like VeElSkSiEdL, a split-cassette with El Kid, and another split release, ‎Tremble / Release Me with fellow Bristol act Zhou, that Gainsborough began to make apparent his range.
"Another diverse UK producer?" we hear you sigh. Well, if further proof were needed of Gainsborough's credentials in this regard, look no further than The Young Echo Collective. The Skull Disco-inspired Bristol-based group that also takes in Kahn, Jabu, El Kid and Ishan Sound centre their operation on an infrequent radio transmission. The show, which regularly reaches beyond the five hour mark, uses Bristol's dub and soundsystem culture as its basis while fanning out across vast swathes of music—electronic and otherwise—with guest bands, DJs and performances from the local area.
What's clear is that Gainsborough's shape-shifting is borne not of a desire to confound as a crux but an inherent curiosity with tempo, and the rhythmic and structural possibilities therein. RA.327 is an exquisite 75-minute notice of his darkened methods.
