RA.401 Jimmy Edgar
Genre: House, Techno
320 kbps | 92:30 min

Magic, clairvoyance, supernatural passions, interstellar envoys - Jimmy Edgar's biography makes it plain that he's operating beyond our earthly realm. He's recently found a way to merge these lines of alternative thinking with his work in music and art: his label Ultramajic is, by his description, a "holistic multi-sensory experience." It's a place where he can release his increasingly techno-influenced music, and present, in collaboration with the designer Pilar Zeta, an otherworldly visual aesthetic that's influenced by old science fiction magazines like Omni.
Around the time of his last album, Majenta, which was released by Hotflush in 2012, it felt like things were falling into place for Edgar. He told us about the balance he'd found in his life through meditation, after the tumultuous early years of his career. Ever since he signed with Warp Records as an 18-year-old, Edgar's music has flowed freely. He built his name with a sexualised brand of electro, as heard on the albums Color Strip and XXX, while work with labels like Semantica and Nonplus has kept people guessing. The same is true of JETS, the side project he began with Travis Stewart, AKA Machinedrum, in 2012. The pair have released only released one EP, but their fantastic live shows, which start at 80 BPM and build blazingly to footwork tempo, have made them an established force.
Edgar has gone to special lengths on his RA podcast: his 90-minute mix, which begins lightly with an air of mystery and ends up as a full-on jacking session, was cut to vinyl to give it a "subtle but unique" quality.

RA.402 Acid Arab
Genre: Acid, Ethnic, House, Techno
320 kbps | 39:21 min

Guido Minisky and Hervé Carvalho are Acid Arab. The basic idea behind the Parisian duo's project is to weld a loose network of Eastern influences—strings, percussion and Arabic melodies—to the framework of house and techno. In their own words, the project first started "as a concept, then a Facebook group, then a party, then (almost) a genre, then it was us."
Last year Versatile Records released the first Acid Arab EP, a various artists 12-inch that featured one track from Minisky and Carvalho (as Acid Arab) alongside productions from the likes of I:Cube and Crackboy, who remixed Omar Souleyman's "Shift Al Mani." Each production took the Acid Arab concept and ran with it, laying bare the project's potential. The release was followed by a second Acid Arab EP, this time featuring impressive cuts from Legowelt and DJ Gregory (as Headcore). And towards the end of 2013, they announced plans to release an Acid Arab compilation. Due out through Versatile this month, it features mostly unheard material from French luminaries like I:Cube, Etienne Jaumet and Pilooski, while two of Minisky and Carvalho's own tracks—one of which features a Parisian street performer called Sha dïfeature as well.
The combination of Middle-Eastern genres and dance music has been done before (with mixed results) but Minisky and Carvalho have carved themselves a strange and exciting niche. Their RA podcast showcases a softer side of the project, averting its gaze from the dance floor for a rich and gripping 40-minute journey.

RA.403 Kris Wadsworth
Genre: Detroit Techno, Tech House
320 kbps | 52:17 min

In 2010, Kris Wadsworth broke the record for usage of the word "fuck" in an RA article. The piece was Touring Scenes, a first-person account of life on the road, and it summed up the salty, brutally honest attitude he's brought to house and techno since 2008. His personality type is evident in his music. Wadsworth pushes a straightforward brand of deep house and techno that doesn't pull any punches. He's been a mainstay on labels like Morris / Audio, Get Physical and Hypercolour, each of whom have released some of his two-dozen or so 12-inches. There's often a sly sense of humour in Wadsworth's music, which extends to his sample-usage, tracks titles and, more recently, the name of his record label, Uranus. The three hand-stamped white labels that have come out on that imprint so far have been duskier than his usual stuff, and wouldn't sound out of place in a Levon Vincent set. He's also been busy preparing his second album, Popularity, which will see release through Hypercolour this month.
It won't come as a surprise that Wadsworth keeps things bullshit-free when it comes to DJing. His RA mix, which was recorded live from vinyl with no post-processing, is an exact reflection of his club sets—in other words, ballsy house and techno all the way.

RA.404 Evian Christ
Genre: Ambient, New Age, IDM, Experimental, Dancehall, Breakbeat, Bass
320 kbps | 52:17 min

Joshua Leary's career so far has played out like a young producer's dream. The English artist was discovered through a series of tracks he uploaded to YouTube, which spread like wildfire over the internet in a single day. Tri Angle quickly snapped him up and released his first record, Kings And Them, and a year later Kanye West tapped him for production work on Yeezus. This led to a publishing deal with West's G.O.O.D. Music, also home to Pusha T and Hudson Mohawke. Leary's next record, the Waterfall EP, is easily one of the most anticipated of the year.
Where Evian Christ's early material was dark and haunting, his recent work has tapped into a melancholic trance vibe, likely influenced by his father's stint as a trance DJ. He's always had a way with slamming hip-hop percussion, but last year's conceptual Duga-3 showed he could do ambient music just as well. That's the mode we find him in for his RA podcast. A carefully-constructed journey through new age, trance and dance hall (with a junglist edit of Actress thrown in for good measure), you'll want to turn the lights off for this one.

RA.405 Galcher Lustwerk

Цитата:
Galcher Lustwerk's vocal style is reminiscent of the literary "iceberg theory"— leaving certain things unsaid is more powerful than stating them. Combining just a few well-chosen words with stripped-back house beats has been a potent signature sound for the White Material artist. This approach was showcased last year on his debut single, Tape 22, and then on his 100% Galcher mix for Blowing Up The Workshop, which RA writers voted their favourite online mix of 2013. "It started from trying to make rap records," he told us last year. "I became more and more interested in using words to communicate ideas—but only inferred ideas, not explicitly explained ones."

This month the US producer will release his second solo EP, a vinyl-only effort for UK label Tsuba Limited. Galcher's RA podcast offers a glimpse into his wider inspirations, and it's little surprise that vocals play a central role. Recorded in mixtape-style, spoken-word interludes and raps are interspersed with experimental cuts and a few of his unreleased tunes.

RA.406 DJ Marfox
Genre: House, Kizomba
320 kbps | 58:00 min

Today we posted an extended feature called The ghetto sound of Lisbon, in which RA editor Ryan Keeling travelled to the Portuguese capital to meet the artists behind the city's thriving Afro-Portuguese dance music community, and the label, Príncipe, that's exposing their style to the outside world. In this tangled network of producers, crews and neighbourhoods, DJ Marfox is the scene's undisputed leading light. He was a core member of the DJs Do Ghetto crew, who in 2006 put out an eponymous compilation that's viewed as the scene's foundational release. The following year, a chance meeting with Pedro Gomes and Nelson Gomes, who ran the cultural association Filho Único, established a collaboration that would eventually birth the Príncipe label and parties.
Marfox's style, which has its roots in kuduro but incorporates batida, house, kizomba, tarraxinha and funaná, has been showcased outside of Lisbon on Eu Sei Quem Sou, Príncipe's first release, and at festivals such as Unsound and CTM. His frenetic, club-ready music has stylistic depth, but it's important to note that what Marfox does is just the tip of the iceberg for both Príncipe and the Lisbon scene.
RA.406 is a perfect DJ Marfox primer. It features music from all of his releases so far, as well as tracks from his next EP, which is forthcoming on Lit City Tracks. As you'll tell from the mix's opening bars, this music that demands your full attention.

RA.407 Beneath
Genre: House, Techno, UK Funky. UK Garage
320 kbps | 81:42 min

When Beneath first appeared back in 2012, his music was dubbed "sub-zero rollage" by Blackdown, the co-founder of Keysound Recordings and one of his early supporters. Filtering classic grime sensibilities into a melting pot of other influences, Beneath became the most prominent name among a group of producers—Visionist, Logos and Wen among them—storming onto the UK scene, each with his own mongrel sound.
On releases for Tectonic, Keysound and his own No Symbols label, Beneath has taken his broken beats and forged them into something resembling house and techno, though we'd be hard-pressed to use any single genre to classify the young producer's music. His increasingly experimental rhythms have also caught the attention of the avant-garde, as reflected by his recent signing to PAN for an upcoming EP. Weaving together tracks from kindred spirits like Batu, Alex Coulton and A Made Up Sound, RA.407 is an extended session that never bangs the same way twice.

RA.408 Mo Kolours
Genre: Downtempo, Dub, Soul, Deep House, Hip-Hop, Experimental
320 kbps | 60:25 min

Few artists manage to make waves as quickly as Mo Kolours has. The half-English, half-Mauritian singer and producer, real name Joseph Deenmamode, released his first EP in 2011, but by then he'd already been discovered by Gilles Peterson, who booked him for a live session on the BBC. His self-titled debut album, which didn't come out until today, has been hailed by The Guardian as one of the year's best and has completely sold out via pre-order on vinyl and CD.
It's not hard to see what everyone is on about. Deenmamode's music is both soothing and entirely singular, a part-live, part-sampled brew that borrows elements of soul, hip-hop, house and dub without really sounding like any of those genres individually. It's rare that you hear something so completely assured, and yet so seemingly disconnected from any established scene or style. On RA.408, Deenmamode adds some bump to his signature sound, drawing records almost entirely from the close-knit crew of artists around him.
