RA.477 Jane Fitz
Genre: Deep House, Acid, Tech House
320 kbps | 101:38 min

Last year, in a conversation with Hyponik about her party, Night Moves, Jane Fitz casually said something quite radical: "We're not going to do too many because we don't want to be high profile." She expands on the point in the interview below: "[Night Moves] is something that isn't diluted by outside pressure—we have no desire to be hip, or rich, or recognised." This idea seems central to Fitz's MO. For the past 20 years, she's happily plied her trade away from the spotlight, DJing everywhere from Hong Kong (where she lived in the mid-'90s) to Freerotation (where she's currently a resident) to the small clubs scattered across London where she hosts Night Moves with Jade Seatle (they do the occasional daytime party as well, called, naturally, Day Moves).
Her DJ style, meanwhile, has the kind of rich personality that can only come from decades devoted to the craft: whether she's playing raucous acid or soothing ambient, her sets are defined by flawless selection and slick delivery. On RA.477, Fitz showcases her assured style with an hour and 40 minutes of thumping, ethereal house.

Господа, а никто не перезальёт ежегодные сборники Top 100 (не путать с Poll Top 50) до 2013 года?

RA.478 Daniele Baldelli
Genre: Disco, House
320 kbps | 67:27 min

What were you doing this time 46 years ago? It was 1969, and for Daniele Baldelli he'd just started DJing, at a time when DJing as we understand it today didn't exist. It's obviously incredible that the Italian artist is still active today, and equally incredible that he's as busy as ever, playing regularly around Europe and America and releasing high quality music like this year's Cosmic Drag LP on Mule Musiq. The foundations for Baldelli's longevity were established through two key club residencies in the late '70s and early '80s. The first was at Baia Degli Angeli, a club that was thought of as the Italian equivalent of Studio 54. Baldelli followed in the footsteps of the highly influential Baia residents Tom Sison and Bob Day by mixing with imported disco records, a new and unique proposition for the Italian scene. Baldelli was technical perfectionist who was known to privately play 200 tracks into one to see which fitted best. Following Baia's closure, Baldelli took a gig at a club called Cosmic in Lake Garda. He'd already begun to experiment with different styles of music at Baia, but at Cosmic he truly went for it. His sets became a maze of African music, disco, psychedelic rock, krautrock and dub, often played at the wrong speed, a flourish that only added to the deeply weird style Baldelli became famous for.
On Baldelli's RA podcast we actually get the opposite of this, an almost exclusive focus on a single style: funk. The set was recorded at Le Plaisir in Lake Garda, and it finds Baldelli gliding through tracks with the panache of an almost 50-year veteran of the craft.

RA.479 Cassegrain
Genre: Techno
320 kbps | 60:56 min

When Alex Tsiridis and Hüseyin Evirgen attended the 2008 Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona, they might not have imagined how game-changing the trip would turn out to be. Tsiridis, who is Greek-English, lived in Wales back then; Evirgren, originally from Istanbul, was splitting his time between Berlin and Vienna. Cassegrain was born when they crossed paths at the academy. In the seven years since then, the duo have released over a dozen 12-inches of mind-bending techno on labels like Prologue, Krake and, most recently, Function and Inland's Infrastructure New York, tunnelling further and further into their murky and immersive sound with each one. For years they collaborated remotely, sending each other stems over email. Now they're both based in Berlin, a move that's ushered in a new phase for the project.
Cassegrain's combination of engrossing atmospheres, tactile sound design and hypnotic rhythms tends to have an almost psychedelic effect. That's basically what you get on RA 479—a propulsive, 22-track romp through the subconscious.

RA.480 Michael Gracioppo
Genre: Deep House, Tech House
320 kbps | 59:03 min

Michael Gracioppo is a talented new producer who makes the kind of melodic house music that's been championed by artists like Dixon, Âme and Tale Of Us in recent years. He comes from Montréal, now lives in Berlin and is in his mid-20s—until he responded to our interview questions, that was all we knew. Gracioppo is most readily associated with his releases on Innervisions. In 2013 he put out the single-sided "Creep," which featured vocals by Wayne Tennant and felt like a very natural fit for the label. The track moved with a soaring sense of melancholy, and was eventually remixed in a similar vein by Tale Of Us and Vaal and Recondite. Gracioppo continued his anthemic touch for Innervisions when his remix of Clockwork's "Running, Searching" appeared on Secret Weapons (Part Seven) earlier this year. The dramatic dance floor impact of these tracks may have actually led people to overlook the bit of Gracioppo's music he seems most concerned with: the details. On Santo & Christine, for Motor City Drum Ensemble's MCDE label, it was easier to zero in on the snatches of audio and incidental noises that give Gracioppo his unique flair.
With gigs at DC10, Panorama Bar and Plastic People now under his belt, Gracioppo is gaining some nice momentum in the live sphere. His RA podcast is a blend of tracks you might hear at one of his upcoming gigs and music from the artists who inspired him to get there.

RA.481 Jasper James
Genre: Techno
320 kbps | 104:55 min

On his RA podcast, Jasper James is never afraid to let rip. The mix evokes a time when house DJs tended to move dance floors with more direct musical expressions—a period before the restrained DJ style of the mid-'00s minimal boom became prevalent. Its abundance of vocal samples and hooks, which range in mood from joyous to gloomy, also feels like a refreshing throwback. But James isn't some old hand who's trying to revive the past. He's a Scottish artist in his mid-20s who's recently emerged as one of the UK's most popular new DJs.
James is the son of Harri, the long-serving Sub Club resident, who taught him how to DJ when he was 13. He's talked in interviews about "getting" house music around this age, when he saw his dad smashing a tent at T In The Park, a festival James had attended every year since he was a young kid. James has also counted Jackmaster as a friend and mentor over the years, describing him below as a massive motivational force in his career. James will probably always have these associations, but it's obvious that he's now come into his own. Most notably, he's about to start a weekly residency at Phonox, a new London club from the people behind XOYO and The Nest. He recently followed up his debut record—last year's Sneaky on Optimo Trax—with an EP called ZTRK1 on Leftroom, and in 2015 he's been gigging harder than ever, spinning at clubs like Space, Warehouse Project and fabric.

RA.482 Mind Against
Genre: Techno
320 kbps | 59:15 min

It all happened pretty quickly for Alessandro and Federico Fognini. In 2011, after years of making music in one form or another, the two brothers formed a new DJ and production duo: Mind Against. Two years later they'd moved from Italy to Berlin and had their first record out on Life & Death (Atlant), with another two in the pipeline (Avalon and Strange Days). By then their DJ careers had taken off and they were playing somewhere in the world every weekend. It seems they made quite an impression on their audiences: last December, they debuted in our annual Top DJs poll all the way up at #33.
Sometimes it's hard to say exactly why an act breaks through, but not with these guys. From the off, Mind Against had a signature sound that was immersive and completely their own: cosmic, emotionally rich and banging when it needs to be. RA.482 shows us an especially subtle side of their sound, with 58 minutes of techno that gently ebbs and flows.

RA.485 DJ Firmeza
Genre: Afrobeat, House
320 kbps | 37:44 min

This photo does a great job of capturing the appeal of DJ Firmeza and the scene he comes from. It was taken during a Príncipe showcase at Café Oto in London earlier this summer, and it shows the sweaty culmination of Firmeza's set, as the chaos on the dance floor spilled over to the DJ booth. The music at that moment—a blend of styles like kuduro, batida and Afro house—was fast, rhythmically complex and impossibly energetic. The sound, which has its roots in Lisbon's Afro-Portuguese club music scene, has been gradually gaining momentum outside of the city in the last couple years, thanks mainly to the label Príncipe. Since RA editor Ryan Keeling profiled the scene near the beginning of last year, the label has introduced a host of new names to international audiences, while the revered UK imprint Warp began showcasing the sound with a compilation series called CARGAA. Leading figures like DJ Marfox and DJ Nigga Fox have become in-demand touring acts, and the 20-year-old Firmeza is well on his way to joining them.
Firmeza has a glowing reputation in Lisbon as a technically dexterous DJ who, like many in the scene, mainly plays his own music. His tracks focus on smart and effective drum programming with the occasional oddball flourish, and he's so far had a split release out on Príncipe and an appearance on the second CARGAA compilation. In October Firmeza will release his first solo record on Príncipe, the six-track Alma Do Meu Pai, which serves as both a deeper exploration of his talents and a tribute to his late father. None of the music on Firmeza's short but sweet RA podcast has been released, which shows you just how inspired he is at the moment.

RA.484 Bjarki
Genre: Techno
320 kbps | 61:25 min

If you checked out our show on BBC Radio 1 last month you may have noticed something curious about the tracklist for Nina Kraviz's guest mix: eight of the 17 cuts she selected were by Bjarki. Kraviz used the mix to showcase the upcoming releases on her label Trip, and since it launched last year, Bjarki has emerged as its brightest talent. So far we've had just a taste of the Icelandic artist's style. His recent EP, Arthur And Intergalactic Whales, featured the wonderfully mindless "I Wanna Go Bang," which is shaping up to be one of the biggest techno tracks of 2015, and the more subtle but no less powerful "Orange Juice Man." His tracks for the Trip compilations De Niro Is Concerned and The Deviant Octopus were more functional, but "Revolution" and "Polygon Pink Toast" were both quietly unique. As strong as Bjarki's music has been so far though, it's his vast quantity of unreleased tracks that confirms just how bright his future could be. A brief biography on his Facebook page describes him as "a very low profile, stay-at-home audiophile," and below Bjarki says that it's a total necessity for him to bang tracks out quickly. This frees him to shoot off in many different directions while maintaining the rock-solid low-end that's become one of his trademarks.
You'll see what we mean on RA.484. The mix is exclusively made up of unreleased Bjarki tracks, some of which will come out on Trip, some of which will never be released. The strikingly diverse hour takes in jacking, Chicago-influenced cuts, deadly serious deep techno, and a moment of hardcore revivalism that, like Bjarki himself, we're sure you'll be hearing more of.

RA.483 Sassy J
Genre: House, Dicso
320 kbps | 65:26 min

There's no shortage of exceptional resident DJs plying their trade in small cities around the world. Sassy J is one of those DJs. She's had plenty of esteemed guests at her Patchwork night in Bern, Switzerland—Moodymann, MF Doom, Theo Parrish, Sadar Bahar and Floating Points among them—but it's her own wide-ranging approach to playing records that has shaped the party. There's a sense of handcrafted care attached to anything she puts her name to. As well as DJing and promoting, she designs a colourful range of clothes, flyers and record sleeves.
Growing up in Bern, Sassy J didn't have to look far for musical inspiration—her mother had her own radio show and her father was a jazz musician. As a teenager she began travelling from Switzerland to London to attend Co-Op nights. These parties, initially held at Velvet Rooms and later at Plastic People, were a vital incubator for London's broken-beat scene. Co-Op's sense of freedom and musicality informed Sassy J's own approach to DJing, one that she has fine-tuned at Patchwork. These talents are increasingly in demand outside her native country—she now holds down a steady international touring schedule and in 2014 she was lined up to record a cassette mix for Will Bankhead's label, The Trilogy Tapes. Her style is on full display throughout RA 483, an hour-long selection that builds from smooth house to full-throttle disco.

In 2012, DJ Richard founded White Material with Quinn Taylor, AKA Young Male, a friend and former classmate at Rhode Island School Of Design. By their own admission, they were a little wet behind the ears. "The only thing I knew about selling music was selling cassettes at a noise show," Richard told us a couple years ago. That didn't slow them down much—their tracks were strange and fresh enough to make their label an immediate hit, landing a distribution deal with Hard Wax and quickly selling out their first releases. Things have moved fast since then. Richard relocated to Berlin, got a job at Record Loft and honed his craft as a DJ and producer. This month he released Grind, his excellent debut album on Dial Records.
On paper it might seem like Richard's changed a lot these past few years, moving as he has from the basement shows of Providence to the nightclubs of Europe. But his history with America's scrappy noise underground still informs his music, lending a dark, arthouse spirit to even his most clubby productions. RA.486 underlines this fact, stringing 74 minutes of avant-garde selections into what sounds like a transmission from the dark corners of the subconscious.

Liam O'Shea has been quietly killing it for a long time. He's inseperably linked to Sheffield, his hometown, where his work as a DJ, producer, promoter and all round solid guy has made him a local hero. O'Shea plays and produces forward-facing strains of house and techno, but over the last 20 years he's been involved with many different sounds and scenes. He has roots in the Sheffield bleep scene, and built his reputation as a DJ at NY Sushi, a party that was known for pushing drum & bass, hip-hop and bass music. He then flipped the script for a few years, playing in a string of rock and folk bands and working at a local music-gear store. At the time, Sheffield nightlife had fallen into a fallow period, but O'Shea's next venture, Downlow, a party he co-ran, helped reboot the city's club scene.
"We really think knife and fork-ville has turned a corner and is finally getting its name well and truly back on the electronic music map," reads one of the party's flyers from early 2011, a reference to Sheffield's history as a "steel city." They brought acts like Ben UFO, Petre Inspirescu and DJ Deep to the Dan Sane warehouse, and this approach, both in terms of bookings and venue, paved the way for Hope Works, O'Shea's latest endeavour. Situated a short distance from the city centre, the venue nods to the Sheffield's gritty industrial past. Hope Works is low on thrills and high on vibes, and has a heavy Void soundsystem that's been put through its paces by the likes of Jeff Mills, Ben Klock and Theo Parrish.
The backdrop to this has been O'Shea's productions. Seaghdha, his label, released a low-key run of ten Lo Shea 12-inches between 2012 and 2014, and the quality throughout was sky-high. This lead to him signing records to, among others, Phonica White and the secretsundaze offshoot SZE. Last year he set up a Hope Works record label with the aim of bringing the feel of the club to wax. O'Shea's tracks have a few hallmarks, which you'll also notice in his RA podcast. His rhythms have a strong sense of funk, and his bass and lead sounds often draw from the ruder end of drum & bass and bass music. The healthy volume of his own unreleased music on RA.487 only confirms that O'Shea deserves global attention.
