Flashback: The Rolling Stones (Briefly) Reunite With Bill Wyman in 2012

On Monday, the Rolling Stones announced U.S. dates for their 2019 No Filter tour. The news followed months of rumors, fueled in no small part by the Stones themselves plastering their iconic tongue logo at stadiums all over America. Unlike the marathon tours of the past, this one is hitting a mere 13 markets. When your drummer is going to celebrate his 78th birthday on the road, it’s best to not push things too hard.

The Stones have hit the road every year since coming back together in 2012 after a five-year break. Their comeback began very tentatively in October of 2012 with a pair of warmup shows in France followed by two concerts at London’s 02 Arena, one gig in Brooklyn and another in Newark. The group was celebrating its 50th anniversary and decided to invite former guitarist Mick Taylor and former bassist Bill Wyman to guest with them. It was either a rare moment of sentimentality or an attempt to justify their exorbitant ticket prices, but either way this was a very big deal for Stones fans. Taylor played with the group at a 1981 show in Kansas City, but they hadn’t shared a stage with Wyman since his final gig with the band in 1990.

Keith Richards on Rolling Stones’ Stadium Tour: ‘Maybe This Will Be the Last One’

Keith Richards seems genuinely moved that, after 57 years as a band, the Rolling Stones will be playing to stadium crowds this spring in the U.S. – the country he calls the band’s “original hunting ground.” “I really can’t put words on it,” he tells Rolling Stone, when asked what a 20-year-old Keith Richards would have thought about playing stadium shows when the band first played stateside in 1964. “It’s just amazing, man. I never expected to get around to Louis Armstrong status, you know?”

The latest leg of the band’s No Filter tour, which kicks off April 20th at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, will mark the group’s first U.S. shows since 2015’s Zip Code tour, and include cities like Jacksonville, Florida, which they haven’t played in decades. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. Here, Richards talks about what songs he wants to play, the magic of Charlie Watts and the Stones’ first original album since 2005’s A Bigger Bang.

Flashback: Keith Richards, Elvis’ Sidemen and the Band Hit the Studio in 1996

One of the coolest gatherings in rock & roll history happened in July 1996. Over three days, Keith Richards, Elvis’ sidemen Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana – plus Levon Helm, Garth Hudson and Rick Danko of the Band – all got together at Helm’s Woodstock, New York barn studio to record a track. The occasion was All the Kings Men, an LP honoring Presley on the 20th anniversary of his death. But it was not a typical tribute album; Elvis’ original band members oversaw and played on it. It also included strong new material; the song Richards played on, “Deuce and a Quarter,” by Gwil Owen and Kevin Gordon, was a completely fresh rockabilly classic.

For Richards, the day was forty years in the making. Moore’s playing on “Heartbreak Hotel” is the reason why he picked up the electric guitar in the first place. “Everyone wanted to be Elvis. I wanted to be Scotty,” he famously said. After Moore died in 2016, Richards recalled the magic of his guitar sounds: “There’s a little jazz in his playing, some great country licks and a grounding in the blues as well,” Richards told Rolling Stone. “It’s never been duplicated. I can’t copy it.”

Flashback: Watch Rolling Stones Dust Off ‘Play With Fire’ for First Time in 30 Years

When the Rolling Stones play a stadium, they usually stick to the hits. So it was extra surprising in Hamburg, Germany on September 9th, 2017 when they broke out 1965’s haunting “Play With Fire” for the first time in nearly 30 years.

The song, originally released as a B-side to “The Last Time,” is a classic, the story of a young high-society woman and her mother who’s “an heiress, owns a block in Saint John’s Wood.” It’s full of mystery, with some wondering if it’s about Jagger having a three-way relationship with the mother and daughter. “Ah, the imagination of teenager!” Jagger said when asked that question in 1968, according to 2016’s The Rolling Stones All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Track. It was cut in the early hours one January night after an all-night session in which the band recorded “The Last Time.” Jagger and Keith Richards are the only two Stones on the track – Jack Nietzsche played harpsichord and Phil Spector played electric guitar. “’Play with Fire’ sounds amazing,” Mick Jagger told RS in 1995. ”It’s a very in-your-face kind of sound and very clearly done. You can hear all the vocal stuff on it. And I’m playing the tambourines.”

Jagger had apparently forgotten how amazing the song sounded by the time of the No Filter tour. In an interview for his art book Set Pieces: The Rolling Stones Set Lists, Ronnie Wood told us that he had to personally request they add it in for the first time since the Steel Wheels tour. “I think I may have suggested it to Mick – he didn’t realize what a great song it was,” Wood said. “And I think he went away and thought about it and it just suddenly appeared at rehearsal. Keith and I were both playing acoustics. That’s another one I’d like to do more often – as a sort of choice between that and ‘Angie,’ that kind of thing.” Jagger introduced the song as a “very slow romantic ballad, a very old one that we haven’t done for a long, long time.” Here’s hoping the band play it when they hit the road again this summer.

Здрово! Одна из самых любимых песен у них! Звук шикарный.
He was one of God's own prototypes: a high-powered mutant never even considered for mass-production. Too weird to live, too rare to die."
We will miss you.

Rolling Stones’ Charlie Watts Opens Up to Chad Smith in Rare Interview

For many Rolling Stones fans, Charlie Watts is the band’s most mysterious and intriguing member. He’s a guy who prefers jazz to rock, yet has spent nearly 60 years playing in the world’s greatest rock & roll band. (When the Stones played Glastonbury in 2013, he said, “I don’t want to do it. Everyone else does. I don’t like playing outdoors, and I certainly don’t like festivals.”) A well-dressed eccentric, he is known to draw a sketch of every single hotel room he stays in and owns cars despite being unable to drive. “He’s a very secretive man,” Keith Richards recently told Rolling Stone, asked to explain how Watts is still able to carry a two-plus hour show at his age. “I think it’s just him. I don’t think he does anything particularly. That is just Charlie. That’s what’s so amazing about the man. It’s my privilege to play with Charlie Watts.”

Watts doesn’t do a lot of interviews, but he recently did grant one to Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for the site DrumChannel.com, as part of Smith’s regular series. While Watts usually comes across as quiet or extremely dry in interviews, here he’s relaxed, funny and ready to open up. In part one of the interview (the only portion available for free), Watts traces his musical evolution, from hearing Gerry Mulligan’s “Walkin’ Shoes” to his early teen years watching dance bands. He remembers hearing Charlie Parker when he was 14. “I suppose it’s like kids hearing Jimi Hendrix. You suddenly think, ‘What the hell is he playing?’ I heard Bird and I thought, ‘That’s fantastic. I want to do that in a club in New York.’”

Keith Richards Reveals Rolling Stones’ Studio Plans and Why They Still Tour

“I’m OK, man, as usual — freezing!” says Keith Richards, calling from his home in Connecticut on a recent January afternoon. The guitarist is checking in to talk about the 30th anniversary reissue of Talk is Cheap, his classic album with his solo project the X-Pensive Winos, which is out March 29th (a deeper story on that album will come closer to release). Richards has a lot more happening in the next few months. The Rolling Stones kick off their first U.S. stadium run in four years on April 20th in Miami — but before that, Richards reveals, the band will return to the studio for about a week to continue work on their first album of original songs since 2005’s A Bigger Bang. “I’m preparing more than anything else, putting material together,” he says.

He describes the process: “Sometimes it’s not as much writing as listening to what’s been written and figuring it out, and honing and all kinds of stuff.” He trails off and laughs: “It’s very boring. It’s like a carpentry shop.”

Richards says it’s “perfect timing” to hit the studio before the tour. He’s extremely excited for the U.S. run, which includes New Orleans’ Jazz Fest and multiple nights in New Jersey and Chicago stadiums. “It’s what I do,” Richards says, adding that the country holds a sentimental place dating back to their breakthrough in 1964. “To play back in the States again, it’s fantastic. It’s been a while. I always think of it as our really early hunting grounds. Although we had already done it in England, to work over a whole continent was pretty astounding. So I’ve always had a soft spot for working in America.”

Rolling Stones Postpone North American Tour as Mick Jagger Gets Medical Treatment

The Rolling Stones have postponed their upcoming North American tour due to Mick Jagger’s need for medical treatment.

“Mick Jagger has been advised by doctors that he cannot go on tour at this time as he needs medical treatment,” the band’s publicist said in a press release. “The doctors have advised Mick that he is expected to make a complete recovery so that he can get back on stage as soon as possible.

Jagger added in a statement, “I hate letting our fans down and I’m hugely disappointed to have to postpone the tour but am looking forward to getting back on stage as soon as I can.”

The 17 postponed concerts span from an April 20th gig in Miami to the band’s July 29th show at Canada’s Burl’s Creek Event Grounds.

Mick Jagger: Heart Surgery Postponed Rolling Stones Tour

Mick Jagger will undergo surgery to replace a valve in his heart, Rolling Stone confirmed. As a result of the procedure and recovery period, the Rolling Stones postponed the North American leg of their No Filter tour, which ran from April 20th to July 29th.

When the postponement was initially announced, a rep for the band said, “Mick Jagger has been advised by doctors that he cannot go on tour at this time as he needs medical treatment. The doctors have advised Mick that he is expected to make a complete recovery so that he can get back on stage as soon as possible.”

Jagger said in a statement, “I really hate letting you down like this. I’m devastated for having to postpone the tour but I will be working very hard to be back on stage as soon as I can.”

Drudge Report first reported news of the heart valve surgery, adding that the procedure will take place Friday in New York and that Jagger is expected to make a full recovery and return to touring this summer. Despite the impending procedure, paparazzi caught Jagger in good spirits Sunday when the singer and his family visited Miami.

Ronnie Wood tweeted following the postponement, “We’ll miss you over the next few weeks, but we’re looking forward to seeing you all again very soon. Here’s to Mick ~ thanks for your supportive messages it means so much to us.”

Keith Richards added, “A big disappointment for everyone but things need to be taken care of and we will see you soon. Mick, we are always there for you!”

The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger Successfully Undergoes Heart Surgery

Finally some good news from a septuagenarian rock legend — Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger has successfully undergone heart surgery to replace a faulty valve.

It was originally reported that Jagger would go under the knife today (April 5) but last night, Billboard reported the singer’s procedure had been completed without incident.

The transcatheter aortic valve replacement is a minimally invasive surgery, so doctors were able to replace the valve without opening Jagger’s chest. Recovery time is far shorter than open heart surgery, with Jagger only needing four to five days rest and some additional time before returning to the stage.

Neither Jagger nor the Rolling Stones have commented on the successful surgery as of press time.

Rolling Stones Announce ‘Bridges To Bremen’ Concert Film, Highlighting 1998 Gig
